Project Title: Offering Power Peace and Purpose to the Children of New York
Project Description:

Motivated by the loss of his first born, Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg developed a non-pharmacologic therapeutic protocol that has mitigated the pain of critically ill children across the globe. Central to the protocol is a modified martial arts program. Kids quickly learn meditative and breathing tools while internalizing EMPOWERMENT themes inherent to the martial arts. Kids LOVE it. They cease to think of themselves as just “sick kids.” In the program parlance, they become ‘POWERFUL MARTIAL ARTISTS.’
In New York we have well developed relationships with Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester; we are expanding. As the world re-opens its doors, our Martial Arts Therapists–fully dressed in karate garb—will visit children, one-on-one in hospitals. They will train children in pain mitigating breathing techniques; they will teach them modified–but very “cool”—karate moves. The MAT’s will coach the kids through painful, invasive procedure; they will offer camaraderie and comfort. The children (and parents) heartily welcome these visits. In the words of one philosophical little boy, “A hospital can be such a lonely place.” To supplement, we will create a digital group class, available to any child who needs our help. We are hopeful (it has been our experience) that this effort will provide community and social opportunity to kids whose outreach has been curtailed by illness and immunosuppressant restraints.
As a component of the year’s activities, we work also with the Sunrise Camp (VX), virtual arm of the Sunrise Day Camps. They ask us to provide 6 sessions every week throughout the 8-week summer term. We have been encouraged to offer service to Sunrise Day Camps in Long Island, Orangeburg and Staten Island. We look forward to offering these very special facilities our very special in person classes.
