Project Title: Family Retreat Program
Project Description:
Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, through the various stages of the child’s illness.
Camp Sunshine is one of the only programs in the nation with the distinction of having been designed to serve the entire family in a retreat model. Retreats are illness specific, hosted year-round and families participate at no cost. Since its inception in 1984, more than 60,000 family members have participated in a Camp Sunshine retreat.
When a child faces a life-threatening illness, it impacts the entire family – emotionally, physically and financially. Families are thrown into a world of doctors, medical appointments and tests, confusion and fear. They frequently feel isolated, sharing not even their closest family members and friends understand the struggles. And they often become disconnected from each other as they face the day to day challenges the illness, and even the treatment place in front of them.
Retreats bring families of children battling life-threatening illnesses together (in-person and since 2020 virtually) in a supportive and healing environment. For families, Camp Sunshine becomes a community where every member feels supported and perhaps for the first time- not alone. This community continues to be a support long after the retreat ends.
The program objectives are: (a) to enhance communication and reconnect family members, (b) to provide a safe, supportive and understanding community in which families feel a part of, and (c) to empower families to face an uncertain future with strength and hope.
Families leave a Camp Sunshine retreat with wonderful memories, lasting friendships, a support system of families who truly understand the struggles they are facing, and renewed energy and hope to cope with upcoming challenges.
