Project Title: Creating Community: Art and Sustainability
Project Description:

Creating Community: Art & Sustainability is a year-long immersive experience for 12 youth 12-18 years old from our neighboring mountain towns in rural Puerto Rico. This outdoor education program brings together a cohort of youth who are eager to explore nature through creative arts and sustainability. Participants meet once a month for a day-long gathering at our camp facilities located within ample farm and forest land. This natural and communal space provides the ideal setting for the group to engage in meaningful collaborative skill building and also cultivate lasting relationships with self, each other, and the environment.

Throughout the year, primary mentors accompany and guide the cohort through an intentional place-based curriculum that centers socio-emotional growth and connection to the land. Through group dynamics, check-ins and group reflections, mentors ensure that each participant has the tools needed to immerse themselves in each learning opportunity. Each monthly gathering hosts a guest instructor who provides a specialized workshop focusing on creative expression, practices for sustainable living, and leadership development. Topics may include: natural pigments, solar energy, ecological farming, water management, nature crafts such as basket weaving, earth building, nutritious cooking and more. These workshops aim to empower participating youth by providing practical skills that foster resilience. Families are invited to join for the last group gathering where participants present their creations and projects, and we reflect about the program.

After 2 years of social isolation due to the pandemic –preceded by earthquakes, hurricanes, and economic crisis– the rural population we aim to serve through this program is in dire need of re-connection, self-expression, and empowerment. Creating Community: Art & Sustainability is our grain of sand to share transformative experiences in nature that inspire well being and provide tools for each to achieve their full potential.
