Project Title: Ehouse Children’s Development Program
Project Description:

Oakland Elizabeth House (Ehouse) is a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children who live in Alameda County. Coming to Ehouse from various shelters, recovery programs, and even their cars, our families arrive with the clothes on their backs and their life belongings in garbage bags.
Our Children’s Development Program has three components. First, we hold weekly activities on Monday and Thursday nights for children to do arts and crafts, bake cupcakes and cookies, or work on other fun games and projects that teach the importance of sharing and how to play together. Second, Ehouse works with two camps to provide activities and the camp experience. Camps for Kids Project provides children the opportunity to learn new skills, interact with other children, have a place to go that does not make them feel like they are homeless, increase their ability to maintain positive relationships, and help with self-esteem. When camps are closed, we try to take children on field trips to visit sites such as the State Capitol (Sacramento), Aurelia Henry Reinhardt Regional Park, and Alameda beach. And, finally, our Educational Success program, which provides the children at Ehouse with school supplies, technology, and tutoring. Our tutoring component includes any subjects that youth might need help with, on an individual basis. We want all of them to become successful and learn the skills necessary for independence, so our tutoring also focuses on teaching better ways to learn, different techniques to approach education, self-teaching, critical thinking, and problem solving. Rather than give children the answer, or lead them directly to it, our children are guided in their own quest for knowledge.
The goal of this program is to improve the likelihood of positive outcomes for the children at Ehouse through educational and social development.
