Project Title: Haitian Children & Youth Empowerment
Project Description:

SUMMARY: The Haitian Children & Youth Empowerment Program will encourage the educational, social & financial development of elementary, middle & high school students. In addition to tutoring, students will engage in activities that encourage creativity, social awareness, character development, responsibility, & leadership skills.
GOAL: is to encourage and support youth in school and outside the classroom, developing strong and confident youth with strong moral values to become leaders in their families and in their communities.
The HCYE Program (since 2005) will work with 30 children per year, grades K – 12th grade, in the immigrant Haitian community in Palm Beach County. The majority of parents are un/under skilled and un/under educated due to abject poverty in their homeland of Haiti. Weekly Saturday classes during the school year provide academic enrichment for elementary children and monthly youth sessions for middle & high school students will focus on social issues, character development, leadership skills, financial capability, respect and responsibility. Guest speakers bring awareness to special topics, such as mental health, legal issues and careers. Parents are invited to join in select discussions. HTH staff is available for individual tutoring as needed, and to accompany parents to student/parent/teacher conferences, as requested by parents. This comprehensive approach encourages students to reach their full potential in school, in their communities and in life.
Funding will allow for:
• $1000: Guest speakers
• $1500: Food & supplies: food and drinks are provided for Saturday class and youth presentations. Supplies include paper, ink, grade-level workbooks and supplies for group discussion & activities.
• $2500: a part-time salary for the educator & a gas stipends for an assistant. Supporting a salaried educator brings continuity and consistency to this program and will greatly impact/strengthen this program.

Total Project Budget: $24,370
