Project Title: Florida International University Engineers on Wheels Program
Project Description:

The Florida International University Engineers on Wheels (EoW) program is an initiative that brings FIU engineering students to South Florida K-12 schools. EoW provides students with hands-on activities and engineering experiments while exposing them to career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

The program features grade-appropriate, interactive lessons and presentations led by FIU students and overseen by FIU faculty. Student clubs and labs conduct EoW visits and design activities related to their organization’s area of focus. Subjects include mechanical and materials engineering, computer science and information technology, biomedical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, construction and engineering management, and electrical and computer engineering.

EoW also offers virtual programming through our website, including online activities, student-led presentations, and online lesson plans. Our online content is created by FIU students and vetted by local teachers to ensure our lesson plans align with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).

EoW primarily serves the Miami-Dade County Public School (MDCPS) system, which as of April 2020 was the 5th largest school district in the U.S., with a student population that is 71% Hispanic/Latinx and 20% Black/African American, making it one of the largest educational minority pipelines in the nation. Before the onset of COVID-19, EoW conducted 64 in-school visits per academic year to 35 different K-12 schools. The inclusion of our virtual programming allows us to continue supporting local schools through periods of social distancing while broadening our reach to a larger audience.
