Project Title: Food Security for Underprivileged Children
Project Description:
Children in the Glades are disadvantaged, with 95% of them eligible for free and reduced lunch. Our community has suffered many demonstrated negative health consequences associated with food insecurity. These restrictions lead to a host of adverse health outcomes and disparities (Gunderson, Craig Department of Agricultural & Consumer Economics, University of Illinois).
To meet the need for nutritious food for children, the Glades Initiative offers Food Security Programs to increase access to vital food supplies for low-income, food insecure children. These programs include:
• SNAP enrollment assistance
• Food Pantry
• Nutrition Education -The Cooking Matters™
Last year, our bilingual Community Resource Educators assisted over 2,700 low-income residents with applications for SNAP and Medicaid/Medicare benefits. The majority of our clients do not have internet access, have limited literacy, and limited English language. This navigation provided a steady source of food for the 1270 children who received benefits.
The Food Pantry provides more than dry and canned food. The nutritious and varied foods include frozen meats, fish, and vegetables as well as refrigerated dairy and fresh produce. From October 2021 through February 2022, 1081 children received food from the Choice Pantry.
Cooking Matters™ is specifically targeted to low-income children & families. This 6-week course teaches participants, how to prepare healthy meals on a tight budget without compromising nutrition. Some of the courses teach the children themselves about nutrition and how to prepare healthy food. The classes are offered in various locations throughout the Glades to make them accessible to clients without transportation. The trainers speak – Spanish/Creole/English – as 80% of the families we reach are non-English speaking.
The Glades Initiative provides one of the most important resources available to these children to ensure access to a healthier lifestyle and to stave off hunger.
