Project Title: Back to School PBC
Project Description:
Spirit of Giving’s annual Back to School PBC event helps over 5,000local children begin the school year with the tools and confidence they need to succeed. Without this support, disadvantaged and under-resourced youth in our community are at risk of truancy or learning deficiencies, which can lead to a life of crime instead of prosperity. In these unprecedented and uncertain times, more families and children will undoubtedly suffer economically. Now, more than ever, it is critical to provide our children a sense of stability, security, and support as we navigate the waters of our “new normal”. Funding is sought to help underwrite the costs of school supplies and clothing as well as medically necessary screenings provided at the event for this under-served population and their familie, many of whom have reported that the screenings we offer before school each year are the family’s sole annual interaction with a health provider.
Now our Back-to-School event has increased its uniqueness for the Girls Only area it features. We have learned from our community partners that pre-teen and teen girls from low-income families, homeless, or foster families, do not otherwise receive hygienic products they need as they reach maturity. They often do not have proper undergarments and are thrust into embarrassing situations because of their lack of resources.
Back to School PBC offers significant financial relief to area families, many of whom are struggling in the ongoing face of this challenging pandemic. In 2021, families spent an average of $848.90 on school supplies, an all-time high. Projections for 2022 exceed this amount! The comprehensive assistance Back to School PBC provides increases in importance for the significant financial savings it offers our PBC families each year and for the massive collaboration it represents among area non-profits who benefit underserved children and their families.
