Project Title: CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Pepin Riverview
Project Description:
Pepin Academies is a not-for-profit, charter school serving students with learning disabilities. Pepin Academies’ mission is to empower students with learning disabilities to maximize their potential in a positive therapeutic educational environment. Our students represent a broad range of cognitive levels as well as diverse, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Our students can attain the highest of academic standards, if given a chance to demonstrate their knowledge in an appropriate setting.
Pepin Academies focuses on classes and opportunities that will provide possible career paths for our students. The CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Pepin Riverview Project focuses on presentation of complex STEM based curricula through hands-on, kinetic learning. Forensics is the application of science to law. The students will learn to identify, gather, and process evidence from a crime scene. The goal is to move from the crime scene to the courtroom. Many of our students struggle with both math and science. The field of Forensics provides an opportunity to apply both math and science skills such as geometry (measuring the angle of impact for blood spatter or projectiles, measuring bones to estimate height of a person, etc.) and physics ( analysis of microscopic evidence as well as chemical analysis.) Art is additionally combined with the STEM activities (STEAM) in an activity that involves facial reconstruction on skulls using clay to determine a person’s features. The community will be engaged through We hope to engage the community through a field trip to the Crime Scene House at St. Leo University in St. Leo, Florida. In addition, there will be invited speakers such as Dr. Sue Gruner, a Forensic Entomologist who specializes in studying insect development to determine time of death as well as local law enforcement officers to discuss criminal investigations and procedures.
Total Project Budget: Because CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Pepin Riverview is an ongoing Forensics based science class, the budget for the class is roughly $70,000 (teacher plus curriculum for offered classes)
