Project Description:
Imagine six-year-old Myla returning to school after chemotherapy. She has no hair. She feels different. Her classmates want to help but don’t know what to say. Her teacher wants to support her but isn’t sure what she needs. Her friends are afraid of saying the wrong thing. Her family is exhausted. Even the adults around her may struggle to find the right words.
What if they all had a shared language for childhood cancer and knew how to actually help?
Stories That Heal was created to do just that.
Developed by Myla’s Beleaf in partnership with Giz Kids Foundation, Stories That Heal uses puppetry, storytelling, social-emotional learning, and age-appropriate education to help children, families, teachers, and communities navigate the emotional and social realities of childhood cancer. Through stories featuring Myla and her beloved dog Hulk, children explore treatment, friendship, fear, grief, nutrition, resilience, and the many emotions that accompany serious illness.
But this is more than cancer awareness. It is a how-to for compassion. Children learn what to say when a friend has cancer, how to include a classmate who has missed school, and how to respond when someone is scared, sad, or grieving. Teachers and families gain practical language and tools for meaningful conversations. Communities learn how to support—not simply feel sorry for—a child and family facing cancer.
Stories That Heal will be delivered through puppet-based videos, live performances, and supporting resources for children ages 4–12, families, educators, and care professionals.
Myla’s Beleaf has spent years helping families with the financial burden of childhood cancer. Stories That Heal addresses another burden: the isolation and uncertainty children experience when cancer changes their world.
Our goal is simple: help children feel understood, help adults know what to say and do, and help communities become better equipped to walk alongside families facing childhood cancer.
Knowing a child has cancer is awareness. Knowing how to show up for that child is support.
