Project Title: SHICK Basic Needs
Project Description:

The SHICK Basic Needs for Seniors program designed to address the urgent and growing challenges faced by low-income, vulnerable older adults and those with disabilities who struggle to meet essential daily living needs. As the number of older adults continues to increase, more seniors are struggling with limited incomes, mental health challenges, food insecurity, rising healthcare costs, housing instability, and barriers to accessing critical resources. Many seniors live on fixed incomes that do not keep pace with rising costs of housing, food, utilities, healthcare, and transportation. These financial pressures are often compounded by social isolation, declining physical health, limited mobility, and lack of access to supportive services. As a result, seniors are at increased risk of housing instability, food insecurity, poor health outcomes, and diminished quality of life. This program seeks to provide comprehensive, person-centered support to ensure that seniors can age safely, with dignity, and in their own homes and communities. SHICK plays a vital role in consumer protection. Counselors educate beneficiaries about Medicare rights, coverage rules, and how to identify and avoid potential fraud, waste, and abuse. They assist clients in resolving issues such as denied claims, incorrect billing, and coverage disputes, often working directly with Medicare representatives or insurance providers to reach resolutions.
SHICK design and pilot a digital health information platform that consolidates patient data, community health trends, and educational resources into a user-friendly interface. Funds help support the SHICK program by providing the resources needed to offer more Medicare counseling to seniors. Financial support helps cover training for volunteer counselors, educational materials, outreach efforts, and administrative costs. Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging is build a community where aging is supported, independence is protected, and everyone regardless of age or ability has access to the resources they need to thrive.
