Project Title: Eastshore Alliance FC’s (EAFC) Grassroots Program
Project Description:

Eastshore Alliance FC’s (EAFC) Grassroots Program is the entry point for most West Contra Costa County families into organized youth sport. Serving players ages 5–12 through twice-weekly training and league play, Grassroots is where children first learn what it means to be part of a team — showing up for practice, working toward a shared goal, and building the confidence that comes from mastering something new. For many of our players in Richmond, San Pablo, and El Cerrito, it is also their first structured extracurricular activity of any kind.

This program gives children the tools they need to succeed well beyond the field. Regular physical activity is linked to stronger academic engagement, reduced anxiety and depression, and healthier long-term habits — outcomes that matter directly in a service area where West County youth obesity rates run as high as 50.6%, compared to roughly a third countywide. Grassroots also builds the soft skills — communication, resilience, self-regulation, collaboration — that carry into the classroom and, later, the workplace.

Access is the persistent barrier. Youth sport in the Bay Area costs an average of $1,541 per season, putting Grassroots out of reach for families already stretched thin. EAFC’s financial aid removes that barrier directly, and our own enrollment data shows why it matters most for girls: our Grassroots program currently runs 75% boys to 25% girls, a gap driven by cost, not interest.

Every child funded through Grassroots gains a consistent, supportive environment to develop physically, socially, and emotionally — the foundation EAFC’s full player pathway is built on, from Mini Allies through Junior Allies, Competitive play, and college readiness. Support for this program is a direct investment in giving West Contra Costa County’s children the tools to reach their full potential, on and off the field.
