Project Title: Immersive Arts-Themed Interactive Play Area for Children
Project Description:
SouthPark is a rapidly growing urban core within Charlotte, anchored by SouthPark Mall and Symphony Park. Guided by our 2035 Vision Plan, we have been working on projects within the community to create a more walkable and energetic community. These projects are focused on public spaces that facilitate stronger bonds through the increased availability of places for people of all ages to gather and explore.
A key part of this plan is the complete redesign and renovation of Symphony Park, the greenspace at the core of our community, to transform it into a space that is welcoming and fun for all ages, better facilitates activity, and invites a sense of belonging and community. This LOI is for the Hermanowski Foundation’s support of a 3,200 sq ft playspace in the park.
Rather than a standard playground, our plan for this play area is to create an intentionally designed space that immerses children in experiential and sensorial play rooted in art. Along with stepping pods and a large arch tunnel of climbing nets, the design includes multiple kinds of fixed drums and harmonic chimes for children to create their own music. The drums are inspired by musical instruments from around the world, offering unique cultural experiences as well as sensory play. The concept for this play area was in direct response to feedback from families who desire highly interactive elements for their children.
The closest full playground to this is Park Road Park, almost two miles away on busy roads. Evidence of the need for a robust play area for children within SouthPark is seen through the overcrowding of a small playspace near Suffolk Punch Brewing. That playspace can safely and comfortably accommodate 10-15 children, yet is always overcrowded with 2-3 times that many children because it’s the only playground anywhere near community gathering areas.
