Project Title: Music Access
Project Description:

Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS) believes every child deserves access to the transformative power of music — regardless of background, zip code, or financial means.

At the heart of our work is the Music Access Program (MAP), a pathway designed to open doors for children who might otherwise never have the opportunity to play. MAP provides two full years of free Beginning Strings instruction — both group classes and one-on-one lessons — preparing young musicians to join an MYS ensemble. From there, students receive continued private lesson support, small group coaching, tuition assistance, and instrument loans. We also bring live concerts directly into Title 1 schools across the region, reaching thousands of students who may be experiencing orchestral music for the very first time.

Our students reflect the community we serve. The majority of MAP participants are Hispanic or students of color, and we are proud that our broader Ensemble Program — spanning 14 orchestral, jazz, wind, and string ensembles — mirrors that same diversity. Over 60% of our ensemble students identify as students of color, a reflection of our intentional commitment to inclusion.

Beyond access, MYS offers a rigorous, joyful musical environment where young people grow as artists and as people. Students rehearse weekly, perform regularly, and collaborate with professional artists and organizations throughout the region. Our Music Director programs repertoire that spans the classical canon, contemporary works, and music by underrepresented composers — ensuring every student sees themselves in the music they play.

MAP isn’t a side program — it’s our promise. It is how MYS ensures that talent, not circumstance, determines who gets to make music.
