Project Title: CAPACITY BUILDING FOR UNDERSERVED CHILDREN WITH TICK BORNE INDUCED PANS & PANDAS
Project Description:

We founded Heal On Earth, Child to meet the advocacy and healthcare access needs of families affected by pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) with a special interest in congenital tick borne pathogens and infections (i.e., lyme, bartonella, babesia, strep, mycoplasma, & covid). This syndrome includes multiple post-infectious pediatric diseases that are each rare by themselves but together represent a growing problem affecting many. PANS is an underrecognized and misunderstood condition. Due to evolving diagnostic criteria and a lack of awareness among healthcare providers, many children go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, delaying critical treatment. Without proper intervention, these children experience worsening psychiatric and neurological symptoms, leading to unnecessary hospitalizations, school disruptions, and long-term disability. The lack of standardized diagnostic protocols and insurance coverage further compounds the crisis, leaving families without access to necessary care and forcing many to pay out of pocket for treatments that should be a healthcare right, not a privilege.

For affected children and families, PANS can be devastating. Previously healthy children who may have experienced a recent common infection, such as lyme, bartonella, mycoplasma, covid, strep throat or a fever of unknown cause, suddenly develop severe psychiatric symptoms. Almost all have a dramatic onset of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or severely restricted food intake. Additional symptoms include aggressive behavior, severe irritability and mood swings, depression, and hallucinations. Children may lose abilities they once had, have deteriorating school performance, and become more sensitive to light, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Tourette syndrome-like tics and vocalizations and other speech problems occur, and sleep disturbances and new-onset bed wetting are also common. In short, a child who was doing well and developing normally suddenly develops severe mental health issues that make them seem like a different child altogether—one who often is no longer able to do things that they once achieved.
We envision a world without PANS, yet know this will take time, resources, advocacy, and research. To build capacity for advocacy and research, families and patients need a supportive community, which is the overall goal and expected outcome of the work described here. With funding, we will build a more robust website, create outreach, increase awareness of PANS, train members to participate in advocacy, provide medical scholarships for historically marginalized communities and for populations that have been adversely affected by socioeconomic inequities, and help people affected by PANS become active in advocacy to improve healthcare outcomes and fuel research. We welcome the opportunity to further discuss how this funding can catalyze systemic change for children with PANS with a special interest in congenital tick borne pathogens, health equity, and equal opportunity for all children to access appropriate medical care.
