Project Title: Wildfire Recovery: Uplifting Youth Voice
Project Description:

Our organization will address wildfire relief by providing Storytellers PLUS ME workshops for 75 high school students, parents, and/or educators in Altadena and Pasadena who were affected by the Eaton fire.

We are eager to build on work we have already started in this community (supporting literacy by compiling community stories into a published book), by adding the introspective and social emotional component inherent to our Storytellers curriculum. This support would also allow us to grow the culminating community celebration where participants share their stories, engage in activities to collectively process their experience, and celebrate their community resilience.

In Storytellers PLUS ME participants reflect on past experiences to better understand themselves, their strengths, and deepen connections with peers. We adapted this model for Parents and Educators in order to holistically support the social emotional wellness of educational communities and provide supportive adults the tools to better communicate and connect with youth.
If this work is successful, the Altadena and Pasadena communities will see a renewed opportunity to learn from the unique experiences of this recurring seasonal trauma shared by all Angelenos–from the perspective of those most affected. We will also experience improved social ties for the high school students who experience our programming. At this time when youth mental health concerns and loneliness rates are at an all-time high, a trusted social network is more essential than ever. Finally, we will have added the essential and often overlooked voices of youth to the record about these historical fires. Future reflections on this moment will be more inclusive and therefore tell a fuller picture allowing clearer meaning to be made.

The culminating celebration launch will also allow more Angelenos to hear and/or read more about the direct impact of this natural disaster directly from youth to enhance their understanding of the impact this had on residents.
