Project Description:
Heart House addresses education inequity and barriers to academic success faced by refugee and immigrant children in the Vickery Meadow neighborhood of Dallas. Children encounter multiple challenges that hinder their ability to thrive in the education system, including language barriers, trauma from displacement, cultural adjustment difficulties, and limited access to resources and support services. By providing a range of educational programs, resources, and culturally responsive interventions, Heart House bridges social service gaps and ensures that participants have equitable access to quality education. The organization recognizes that education is essential for individual success and plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting social mobility.
Heart House’s main intervention – the H3 Program – integrates learning and living while promoting an environment of equity and inclusion. H3 activities include:
Head: Education-based programming to help children maintain or improve core competencies, with an emphasis on literacy and comprehension, in school subjects through homework support and learning centers.
Heart: Trauma-informed activities include mindful breathing techniques and movements, and interactive SEL (Social- Emotional Learning) activities to develop lifelong characteristics such as resilience, persistence, and curiosity.
Hands: Experiential learning opportunities, including field trips, cultural engagement, and career days.
The program runs the entirety of the Dallas ISD school year, Monday through Friday from 3:15 – 6:00 pm. The program will serve 60 children in grades Kindergarten – Five.
