Project Title: Access Through Art: Expanding Equitable Learning Opportunities at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum
Project Description:

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum’s Learning and Engagement programs ensure that all young people—regardless of income or background—have meaningful access to arts education. Located in New London, Connecticut, a community with significant economic challenges and a richly diverse population, the museum serves as a critical cultural and educational resource for local families and schools.

Each year, the museum welcomes approximately 4,000 K–12 students through structured field trips that integrate visual art with history, literacy, and critical thinking. For students in New London Public Schools, these experiences are fully subsidized, including both admission and transportation costs, eliminating two of the most common barriers to participation in cultural programming.

During these visits, students engage directly with original works of art spanning thousands of years and cultures. Guided tours and hands-on activities are designed to foster curiosity, creativity, and personal connection, while reinforcing classroom learning objectives. For many students, this is their first experience in an art museum—an introduction that can spark lifelong engagement with the arts.

Support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would help sustain and expand these equitable access initiatives, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to participation. Funding will directly underwrite transportation, program materials, and teaching artist support, while allowing the museum to deepen partnerships with local schools and reach additional underserved students across the region.

By removing barriers to access and centering inclusive, high-quality educational experiences, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum empowers young people to see themselves reflected in art and to envision new possibilities for their futures.
