Project Title: VOLS Immigration Project
Project Description:

VOLS respectfully requests $10,000 to provide critical legal advice, representation, and information to NYC’s immigrant young people (age 25 and younger). In these challenging times, VOLS Immigration Project (IP) empowers immigrant young people to know and enforce their rights so they can access safety in the United States as well as education and employment opportunities that help them to achieve their full potential. We provide free direct legal advice and representation, legal education presentations and materials. VOLS model is to partner closely with educators and staff at NYC’s public schools, colleges, and community-based organizations to provide school-based support.

VOLS IP supports immigrant young people on a range of legal issues in order to help them remain in the United States and access school and work. For example, many qualify for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), which provides a path to lawful permanent residency, work authorization, and eventually citizenship. SIJS is available to some of our most vulnerable youth who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents. VOLS also supports young people on legal matters including Employment Authorization, asylum, adjustment of status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), U Visas, T Visas, VAWA, Advanced Parole, and deportation defense.

To increase our impact, VOLS IP’s bilingual Spanish-English legal team recruits, trains, and mentors pro bono volunteer attorneys from 35 law firm/corporate partners to provide additional free legal services to young people.

With this funding, VOLS IP will (i) provide legal advice or representation to 200 immigrant young people under age 25 on a range of immigration legal issues that help them access security, education, and employment, (ii) provide 125 immigrant young people under age 25 with legal education about immigration laws and working with immigration attorneys, and (iii) train and mentor 150 pro bono attorneys on laws and best practices to support immigrant young people and take cases.
