Project Title: RHG’s Youth Mental Health Education Program
Project Description:

RHG is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and Federally Qualified Health Center that addresses healthcare and socioeconomic needs in a six-county service area (Edgecombe, Granville, Halifax, Northampton, Vance, and Warren) in North Carolina. This service area faces longstanding and deeply rooted health disparities that continue to widen without targeted intervention.

In response to a need identified through focus groups with students, families, and school staff, RHG is proposing a Youth Mental Health Education Program that will increase pathways to mental health intervention and access to care through implementing mental health education at its school-based health centers (SBHC). Led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, this program will serve rural, underserved student youth in Halifax and Northampton Counties, North Carolina. Approximately 15 students and 15 staff members would be trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid with the goal of creating a cohort of mental health supporters at each school. This team will meet monthly to support the school/campus’s overall mental health.

Educational curriculum will be developed with the lived experience of students in mind, focusing on prioritizing key areas of mental health such as stress management, coping with bullying/bullying prevention, social media/internet safety, and accessing help when needed. These topics will provide age-appropriate education for student youth, with the aim of increasing pathways to mental health intervention through utilizing SBHC partnerships.

Funding will enable RHG’s SBHC team to train in Youth Mental Health First Aid and develop the curricula necessary to implement the Youth Health Education Program. In addition, students and staff will train in Youth (peer-to-peer) Mental Health First Aid. By supporting the mental health of student youth, RHG is actively transforming the lives of children and young adults living in rural, northeastern North Carolina.
