Project Title: Creative Learning Residency at Kingsbury Elementary
Project Description:
Arts for Learning Connecticut (AFLCT) seeks $5,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support a 10-day arts-integrated residency at F.J. Kingsbury Elementary School in Waterbury, a Title I school serving a predominantly low-income student population. This focused project will provide approximately 75–100 students in grades 3–5 with hands-on, in-class learning led by a professional Teaching Artist in partnership with their classroom teachers.
Over the course of the residency, students will engage in daily creative work—such as storytelling, movement, or visual art—integrated with English Language Arts and other core subjects. Through this process, students will build critical skills that support their success in school and beyond, including communication, confidence, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. For many students at Kingsbury, these experiences provide a rare opportunity to express their ideas, take risks in a supportive environment, and be recognized for their strengths.
The residency will culminate in a classroom-based sharing or informal performance, giving students the opportunity to present their work and reflect on their learning. Teachers will also gain practical strategies for incorporating arts-based approaches into their instruction, extending the impact of the project beyond the residency itself.
This $7,500 project is supported in part by a $2,500 commitment from the Connecticut Office of the Arts. Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will ensure full implementation of the residency, directly supporting Teaching Artist fees and classroom instruction for students who will benefit most from these transformative learning experiences.
