Project Title: Art / Music Therapy Program
Project Description:
Art / Music Therapy Program
Keystone Adolescent Center is a nonprofit (501c3) organization that provides 24-hour care and supervision of delinquent and dependent youth ages 8-21. Upon admission, Keystone Adolescent Center will utilize a variety of treatment modules, focusing on the child’s history and future needs to produce a positive and successful treatment plan. Keystone recognizes the need to provide other outlets for troubled youth when traditional talk therapy fails. Art and Music therapy would provide alternative ways to increase self-esteem, improve social skills, and encourage positive coping mechanisms to help youth process trauma and mental health challenges. Key benefits of this programming would help with emotional expression and regulation by providing a safe, non-verbal outlet to process trauma, anger, sadness, and stress. Art and music will help soothe the brain by lowering anxiety and reducing behavioral issues. Creating something tangible like a painting, journal entry, or song fosters a sense of accomplishment and promotes self-esteem. Group music workshops and art sessions build teamwork, empathy, and communication skills. By increasing self-awareness, it helps youth explore feelings and understand how their emotions and thoughts influence their behaviors. Keystone Adolescent Center believes that this type of therapy is very beneficial to our program. Youth who are reluctant to open up will experience a non-threatening way to allow for an emotional release without the direct pressure of talking about problems. This creative process is very accessible to youth because no prior artistic or musical experience is necessary and the programs can be developed for all ages and talent levels. Through the generous grant from the Hermanowksi Family Foundation, funding will be used to contract the services of art and music teachers/group leaders and purchase supplies for group sessions and individual therapies.
