Project Title: Basic Needs Assistance for Children Coping with Cancer
Project Description:
The Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF) is committed to providing help and hope to New England cancer patients and their families by contributing support for basic needs when needed most.
JAF was established in 2008 to serve New England patients with any type of cancer and of any age who are experiencing financial hardships because of a cancer diagnosis. Founded by former NE Patriots player Joe Andruzzi and his wife Jen, JAF grew out of Joe’s successful battle with cancer.
This request is specific to JAF’s Financial Assistance and Food Security Programs to assist cancer patients who are under the age of 21, and their families. The Financial Assistance Program helps with household expenses such as rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, etc. JAF pays creditors such as banks and other lenders directly on behalf of a family. The Food Security Program offers assistance for food through grocery store gift cards that are mailed directly to patients’ homes so they can choose foods of their own choice and that may be prescribed as part of their treatment.
WHY JAF?
Even before a cancer diagnosis, access to care and positive short and long-term outcomes are highly influenced by social determinants of health, such as available food, stable housing, and transportation. It is known that many families experience barriers to these basic needs. When an individual is in treatment for cancer, families also experience employment disruptions and unexpected expenses that can quickly compromise their financial stability.
For marginalized populations already struggling against inequities, impacts are swift. When left unaddressed, families cope with astronomical debt and some even delay or forgo their care, which is unacceptable to JAF.
JAF implements its programs with social workers at 108 hospitals and cancer centers. These healthcare professionals identify families most in need and help them apply to JAF for assistance.
