Project Title: Esther’s Children: Voices of Iranian Jews
Project Description:
I am writing to express my interest in applying for a grant from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation. This funding would be instrumental in enabling the work of Project Mosaics as we develop multimedia teaching resources that are designed to enhance the instruction of Jewish history and culture in middle and high school settings.
The mission of Project Mosaics is to promote humanities education that elevates and centers Jewish histories, cultures, arts, and identities through the creation of digital multimedia content in order to illuminate Jewish voices from around the world within school settings. Our vision of education focuses on the Jewish people as global, pluralistic, multidimensional, and vibrant.
Project Mosaics is currently developing a series of short digital films for classroom use focused on the study of the history of Jews in Iran and the Iranian Jewish diaspora. While there have been Jews residing in Iran for over 2,500 years, this history is rarely mentioned in history classrooms. Project Mosaics is committed to producing easily-accessible, cost-free, and high-quality digital resources in order to address this absence of abundant curricular tools. With the financial assistance of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we would be able to greatly increase the production of these resources.
Project Mosaics is grateful to be collaborating with a multitude of scholars and Iranian Jewish memoirists on this endeavor. For instance, our video resources will feature the expertise of Lior Sternfeld, an associate professor of history and Jewish Studies at Penn State University and Roya Hakakian, an author and poet.
Project Mosaics recognizes that the representations of Jews in middle and high school settings can be improved considerably through the development and availability of versatile, compelling, and digital learning tools. We believe that the Hermanowski Family Foundation has a role to play in this effort.
