Project Title: The Santa Fe Symphony’s In-School Music Mentorship Program
Project Description:

Access to quality music education is uneven across New Mexico, where many schools lack robust programs or rely on overextended teachers. As a result, students—especially those from low-income backgrounds—often miss out on the academic, social-emotional, and developmental benefits of learning music.
The Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus addresses this gap through its in-school music mentoring program. In partnership with public-school educators, professional teaching artists provide individualized coaching and small-group instruction during the school day—support that can determine whether a student continues or gives up.
Currently, SFS serves 24 middle and high schools (13 Title 1) in Santa Fe and Los Alamos, reaching 450 students (more than 50% low-income) through 15 mentors. However, limited funding allows for weekly mentoring in only eight schools; the remaining 14 receive intermittent support. Demand from teachers—many managing multiple grade levels and instruments—continues to grow, underscoring the need for consistent, weekly engagement.
Funding will expand our mentors’ time in schools supporting school music programs, ensuring that more students receive sustained, high-quality instruction. This investment will:
— Increase access for students who cannot participate in after-school programs
— Support differentiated instruction, improving student outcomes
— Reduce teacher burnout and strengthen school music programs
— Provide equitable opportunities for musically talented students to advance
Despite increasing its mentoring budget by 50% (from $20,000 in 2025 to $30,000 in 2026), SFS cannot meet current demand. Foundation support will directly fund teaching artists, expanding proven, high-impact services that help students thrive and sustain music education in our schools.

Total Project Budget: $30,000
