Project Title: Youth Sport Sampling Program
Project Description:
The majority of the youth and families the Chaldean Community Foundation serves are immigrants and/or refugees. Youth that immigrate to the United States have a more difficult time acculturating with other youth because of the lack of knowledge regarding American sports. During elementary and middle-school years, friend groups are often developed amongst those we play the same sports, attend camps or after school programs together.
Immigrant families do not have the same opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities because of financial limitations, lack of transportation, or cultural misunderstandings of the benefits of playing sports. Some of the benefits of engaging in a variety of sports includes learning values such as teamwork and integrity; developing physical coordination, learning how to communicate and listen, and developing leadership capabilities. The most familiar sport to CCF’s immigrant families is soccer. Through the creation of a sports sampling camp, CCF can train youth on a variety of sports, rules, and game play.
The families CCF serves are primarily low income. Parents of these families are required to focus on providing basic needs such as housing and food for their children, therefore, are unable to afford extra-curricular or sport activities for youth. Sport lessons, sport leagues, gym membership all cost fees that are unaffordable for CCF’s clients. Additionally, many low-income children suffer from food inequalities during the summer because their school provides breakfast and lunch for them. CCF’s camp will provide a healthy snack or small lunch to ensure one meal is provided to youth while at the Chaldean Community Foundation.
The target population is youth ages eight to thirteen.
The goal of the sports camp is to allow youth an opportunity to learn American sports, engage in physical activity, develop skills, and to utilize sports as a way to make new friends and strengthen relationships.
