Project Title: Creative and Natural Pathways to Healing: How Art, Music, Sensory, and Outdoor Experiences Support Youth Mental Health
Project Description:
Methodist Family Health Foundation (MFHF) serves Arkansas children and families statewide who are struggling with mental, behavioral, developmental or emotional issues
MFHF is requesting funds to fulfill program needs to provide consistent access to art, music, outdoor exploration, and sensory-based activities for the Arkansas children and youth who receive services and support from Methodist Family Health.(MFH)
This transformative initiative will provide children and youth in our care with consistent access to art, music, outdoor exploration, and sensory-based activities, all specifically designed to strengthen mental health. Our clients, many of whom have faced trauma, foster care disruptions, and significant emotional or behavioral challenges often struggle to process their experiences through words alone. By integrating creative and sensory approaches alongside traditional therapies, we hope to reach children who are otherwise withdrawn or overwhelmed, opening new doors to healing, growth, and self-expression.
Access to materials and the ability for clients to participate in these types of therapeutic activities will provide avenues for healing and personal growth, offering benefits such as increased self-esteem, better stress management, improved focus, and a stronger sense of self. Incorporating nature-based therapies and activities also offers calming sensory experiences, while creative arts provide tools to express emotions and manage anxiety.
Partnership from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would allow therapists, teachers, and caregivers the ability to request specific items needed for individuals that insurance and Medicaid do not cover. MFHF would be able to provide consistent access to various art mediums, different musical-based experiences, therapeutic sensory items, and different nature/outdoor based experiences.
With grant support, we will ensure every child, regardless of diagnosis or background, has regular opportunities to participate in these proven therapeutic activities. Our goal is to create a nurturing, trauma-informed environment where creative expression, sensory regulation, and nature-based play are woven into daily care.
