Project Title: Theatre for Young Audiences
Project Description:
Coachella Valley Repertory’s (CVRep) education programs provide transformative opportunities for young people to engage with theatre as both an art form and a tool for personal growth. Central to this work is the CVRep Conservatory, a dynamic training ground that bridges aspiring artists with the professional theatre world. Through hands-on instruction led by seasoned professionals, students develop skills in acting, directing, design, and stage management while gaining insight into the creative, technical, and business aspects of theatre production. Participants engage in workshops, masterclasses, and performances that encourage collaboration, creative risk-taking, and a lifelong passion for the arts.
Complementing this training is CVRep’s Theatre for Young Audiences initiative, which produces plays curated specifically for students. These performances promote critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and cultural awareness, and are paired with post-show discussions that deepen understanding and personal connection to the material.
A cornerstone of this work is the annual Youth Outreach Production, Henry’s Law by Stacie Lents—an original play performed by high school actors under the guidance of professional directors and teaching artists. This fully staged production addresses timely issues such as peer pressure, identity, and online interactions, fostering empathy and positive peer relationships. CVRep provides free attendance and transportation for students from more than 18 regional high schools, ensuring equitable access.
Post-performance talkbacks and resource materials connect students to school safety supports and community services, reinforcing the program’s impact beyond the stage. Together, CVRep’s educational offerings cultivate creativity, confidence, and social awareness while expanding access to the performing arts and strengthening the cultural vitality of the Coachella Valley.
