Project Title: Futures Without Violence
Project Description:
Saving Our Youth VA was founded in 2009 on the joy of watching youth succeed and underSaving Our Youth VA was founded in 2009 out of a deep joy in watching young people thrive and a recognition that everyone faces challenges that can hinder their progress. The mission of our afterschool program for grades 6-12 is to empower youth to be productive members of our community by showcasing the importance of education, positive relationships, career readiness and community service.
Unfortunately, in 2024 we lost one of our youth to violence when he was killed by someone he considered a friend. In the aftermath, we provided grieving services for all of our young people and offered counseling support for the adults as well. This tragedy underscored the urgent need for a program that equips youth with the skills to navigate conflict safely and constructively.
The initiative is to give them the necessary tools to stay alive so that they live to succeed and achieve their full potential. It’s designed to help youth stay out of trouble and build pathways toward a future free from violence, especially in their communities where violence is far too common.
We serve youth in the northside of Richmond, VA, a vulnerable population, people in need of special care, support, and protection because of the circumstances of the community. So they have a significantly higher chance of lagging behind on literacy, attendance, and graduation, and a significantly higher chance that they will spend time in jail/prison or be killed.
This program equips them with the tools, support, and guidance they need to make safer choices and to imagine possibilities beyond the cycles of harm around them.
