Project Title: Young Minds Matter: Mental Healthcare is Healthcare
Project Description:
Genesis Community Health is a community health center in Palm Beach County, FL, serving a primarily low-income, Medicaid, and uninsured population of 7,000+ patients annually. Genesis provides medical, mental health, and dental services charged on an income-based sliding fee scale, reducing the most common barrier to adequate health care, cost. Our mission aligns closely with the Hermanowski Family Foundation in that we aim to improve the lives of children and youth, ensuring access and affordability of mental healthcare to equip them with tools to succeed and achieve their full potential.
Mental health conditions in young people often go unnoticed because constant growth and change can make it harder to distinguish changes. Under Genesis’s healthcare programs across four clinics, including two school-based, we make mental healthcare accessible to children and youth. Integrated care means that every patient is screened for mental health conditions when being seen, no matter their presenting health factor. There tends to be less stigma around seeking mental healthcare when services are co-located with primary care or offered in the nurse’s office at a school. Further, collaboration among our staff ensures referrals to behavioral healthcare are timely.
At Genesis Community Health, we have the capacity and clinical expertise to address a multitude of behavioral issues in children and young people. We employ 6 behavioral health providers consisting of Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers to holistically treat conditions ranging from anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and mood and attention disorders as well as autism spectrum disorder. A long-term partnership with the Hermanowski Family Foundation will support both of our missions by investing in the future generation. Funding will support our existing integrated and accessible mental health services for under championed populations in South Florida while also expanding our reach, touching the lives of more children and youth annually.
