Project Title: Expanding Access to Dental Care for Low-Income Children and Families in Southeastern Wisconsin
Project Description:

Community Smiles Dental improves the lives of the underserved through dental healthcare services, preventive education, and advocating for systemic healthcare change – Because everyone deserves a healthy smile. Community Smiles Dental operates two high-volume clinics located just outside Milwaukee in Waukesha County, providing comprehensive dental care to children ages 0–18 across Southeastern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, and surrounding counties. The organization serves children who are uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid and living below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will support direct patient care through the Healthy Smiles for Tots and Teens program. Services include exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants, and restorative care such as fillings and crowns. Many children served face significant barriers to care, including transportation challenges, family work schedules, and a limited number of private dental practices that accept Medicaid. Families frequently travel across county lines to access care, as few providers in the region accept Medicaid, particularly for pediatric patients.

Community Smiles Dental operates with the efficiency and clinical standards of a private practice, ensuring that children receive high-quality care in a setting that respects their dignity. In 2025, the organization served over 4,000 pediatric patients, many traveling from the Greater Milwaukee area to access reliable dental services.

This request will help offset the cost of delivering essential pediatric dental services, including provider time, clinical supplies, and equipment use. Early access to preventive and restorative care reduces the need for more costly emergency treatment and supports better long-term health outcomes. Even a modest investment helps ensure that children across the Greater Milwaukee region receive timely care that keeps them healthy, in school, and free from preventable dental pain.
