Project Title: Free Teen Health Services
Project Description:

Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi (PPTNM) respectfully requests $10,000 to support free teen health services at our Tennessee health centers. Last fiscal year, we served more than 2,000 teens ages 19 and under, and we provided their care for free. This adjustment amounts to roughly $250,000 per year. Free teen sexual and reproductive health care is vital to help teens establish lifelong healthy habits, address sensitive issues confidentially, and prevent minor health problems from becoming serious, costly, or chronic conditions. It removes financial barriers for families, ensuring adolescents receive essential support, treatment, and preventive care. PPTNM’s free teen services promote early intervention and prevention, allowing for early detection of health issues. Planned Parenthood is known for its nonjudgmental care, and teens are more likely to seek help for sensitive topics like sexual health if services are confidential and free. Providing our services at no cost also helps us to reduce health disparities in the community, ensuring that high quality, equitable care for teenagers is available for low-income families, which in turn reduces reliance on emergency rooms for non-urgent issues. Finally, investing in adolescent health builds a foundation for a healthier, more productive adulthood and helps ensure long-term health outcomes as teens learn to care for themselves during critical developmental stages.

We provide reproductive health services including family planning counseling and birth control; pregnancy testing and options counseling; gynecological care including Pap tests; clinical breast exams; emergency contraception; HIV testing and counseling; screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections; safer sex counseling; and referrals for specialized care. In the past, teen services were covered under the Title X federal family planning program and TennCare. Under this administration, we have lost these funding streams, and so we are requesting assistance to continue providing vital teen health services.
