Project Title: Transforming the lives of children with motor disabilities through conductive education
Project Description:
For almost 30 years, the Conductive Learning Center of North America (CLC) has served children and young adults with motor disabilities through the conductive education method. Conductive education is an educational physical rehabilitation approach that originated in Hungary which combines medical knowledge and classroom teaching techniques to help participants gain more mobility and control of their bodies, allowing them to perform crucial tasks like sitting independently in a chair, tying their shoes, preparing meals and eating without assistance, getting dressed, and even walking – all activities necessary for daily living.
CLC’s programs are taught in a peer-group setting and help students develop confidence, step-by-step goal-setting skills, and self-determination. Developing these skills helps improve the quality of life for students living with disabilities, but also positively impacts students’ families. This impact is felt when a child begins to walk, feed themselves, use their voice and body to communicate, and lessens the need for supportive equipment, specialty diets, and full-time caregivers.
The goal of conductive education at CLC is for students to achieve their “optimal physical, cognitive, and social independence” so that they can live life more freely and achieve their full potential.
Through CLC, many students experience life-changing results and go on to attend college, have full-time careers, and be active members of the community – dreams they were once told would be impossible due to their limitations.
We passionately believe that conductive education is the best option for students with a motor disorder because of its whole body, comprehensive approach that not only focuses on physical development, but also social, cognitive, and communication skills. Students and their families have witnessed firsthand the transformational effects of conductive education and many tote CLC as the reason their child can be so active, social, and happy in life.
