Project Title: Revels Kids After-School Workshops
Project Description:

Washington Revels is requesting a grant to offer the Revels Kids after-school workshop program in 3 additional locations in FY2027. The after-school pilot workshops were successfully launched in Fall 2025, and offered in James Daly and Sequoyah Elementary schools, and Concord St. Andrews Church in Maryland.

The 10-class after-school workshop sessions engage students (15 per session) in grade 1-5 through creative arts classes to discover connections between nature, arts, science, geography and diverse global traditions. Our goal is to bring the program to elementary schools (with a specific endeavor to engage Title 1 schools) and local recreation centers to reach underserved children.

There is a pressing need to close the gap in developmental and educational opportunities for students in communities where schools may lack resources in areas such as the arts, culture, science, and geography. This program helps meet that need by offering a safe, supervised, and supportive environment during out-of-school hours—one that nurtures learning among children, strengthens essential soft skills such as collaboration, communication, and self-confidence, and provides them with the necessary tools to achieve their full potential.

Curricula highlights include:
Interactive object-based program; inspired by Smithsonian methodology.
Science: changing of seasons, life cycles, biologic relationships.
Creative Arts: dance, drama, music, interactive games, improvisation.
Geography: exploring the world through a cultural/storytelling lens.
Literature: draw from existing stories, myths, songs, while encouraging new creations.
Visual Arts: production of costume materials, setting, and sometimes props.
Leadership and collaborative skills reinforced.

We will assess program effectiveness using the following indicators: number of participants, number of community-based organizations engaged, number of community-based venues used, number of class sessions, attendance records and teaching artists’ evaluations of student growth.

The program will benefit children by providing them with the opportunity to experience diverse cultural traditions and open their minds and creative spirit.
