Project Title: Nutritional Education and Health Snack options
Project Description:

The Barton Center for Diabetes Education seeks support to enhance the availability of healthy snack options and expand nutrition education for children living with insulin-dependent diabetes who attend our residential and day camp programs. Effective diabetes management requires a careful balance of insulin, physical activity, and nutrition. For children, especially in active camp settings, access to appropriate snacks and real-time education is critical to maintaining safe blood glucose levels and building lifelong self-management skills.

This project will support the procurement of nutrient-dense, diabetes-appropriate snacks used for daily consumption and for the treatment of hypoglycemia. Snacks will be thoughtfully selected to model balanced nutrition, reinforce carbohydrate awareness, and provide safe options during periods of increased physical activity. In addition, funding will support the development and delivery of structured, age-appropriate nutrition education led by a qualified nutrition professional. Topics will include carbohydrate counting, portioning, timing of snacks, and how to make informed food choices in a variety of real-world settings.

Camp provides a unique environment where children can immediately apply what they learn. Throughout each session, campers practice reading labels, dosing insulin based on food intake, and understanding how nutrition impacts their blood glucose levels—skills that are reinforced through hands-on experiences and supported by medical staff.
