Project Description:

Black Carolinian: The History of Us is an educational initiative designed to provide culturally relevant, North Carolina-based history resources to students, educators, and community members. This project will develop and distribute engaging learning materials—including reading passages, worksheets, and interactive activities—focused on the contributions and experiences of Black North Carolinians.

The initiative addresses a critical gap in accessible, localized history education by aligning all materials with North Carolina state standards while making them engaging and easy to implement in classrooms, after-school programs, and community learning spaces. Resources will be distributed both digitally and in print to ensure equitable access across rural and underserved communities.

Funding will support the creation of curriculum materials, printing costs, website development, and community outreach efforts, including workshops and book club-style learning sessions.

Through this project, Black Carolinian aims to reach students across multiple counties in North Carolina, equipping them with a deeper understanding of local history while fostering pride, identity, and critical thinking skills. This initiative will also support educators by providing ready-to-use, standards-aligned content that enhances instruction without increasing workload.
