Project Title: Restoring Dignity for Foster Children
Project Description:

When a child is placed in foster care, it often happens quickly and with little warning. Foster and kinship families may receive a phone call asking if they can welcome a child into their home that same day. Many children arrive with very few belongings, leaving caregivers to immediately provide clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies while helping the child adjust to an unfamiliar environment. Although the state provides a small daily reimbursement, it rarely covers the upfront costs families face in those first days. A Mighty Change of Heart was created to ease this transition. Founded by foster parents Darin and Kara Moss after welcoming more than 25 children into their own home and adopting eight, the organization grew from a simple idea, of no child should arrive at a new home feeling empty-handed. Each child receives a personalized duffle bag embroidered with their name and filled with new clothing, shoes, hygiene products, books, comfort items, and school supplies. Caregivers also receive simple, trauma-informed guides with practical tips for helping children settle in and build trust. This work reflects the Hermanowski Family Foundation’s commitment to helping children to succeed and to achieve their full potential. For many youth entering foster care, something as simple as having their own clothing, school supplies, and personal items can make those first days feel less uncertain. A grant of $10,000 will help A Mighty Change of Heart continue responding to referrals from foster care agencies, group homes, and the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Approximately $8,000 will be used to purchase clothing, hygiene items, books, comfort objects, and school supplies for the duffle bags, while $2,000 will help cover the cost of the space where donations are stored, and bags are assembled by volunteers before being delivered to children.
