Project Title: National Mall Gateway
Project Description:
According to a 2025 study from the National Association of State Board of Educators, about one-third of students cannot describe how the U.S. government works. Equally alarming, according to the 2023 National Assessment of Educational Progress, eighth graders’ scores in civics registered their first decline in 2022 since testing began in 1998 and just 22 percent of eighth graders across the country are working at the Proficient level in civics.
The Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service came together to develop a new and inspiring way for educators, students and the public to learn from and be inspired by the National Mall and civic learning.
The National Mall Gateway, a groundbreaking digital civic education platform launched in September 2025, is a first-of-its-kind digital and onsite learning platform that transforms America’s most iconic public space into America’s greatest living history classroom.
The Gateway utilizes new and emerging technologies, such as AI-powered learning tools, immersive virtual reality, and adaptive lesson-building technology that organize content from trusted sources, including the National Park Service and Library of Congress, to ensure historical accuracy while delivering personalized, immersive learning experiences. Students can virtually explore the National Mall’s monuments, memorials, and historic landscapes through 360-degree tours, interactive history points, and real-time translation and accessibility tools. Educators can create customized, grade-level-appropriate lessons with built-in reflection prompts, enabling civic education tailored to diverse classroom needs.
Grant funding will be used to strengthen and expand the reach of the National Mall Gateway, as a national model for civic learning and public engagement. Designed to be accessible and enduring, the Gateway seeks to inspire students, educators, and the public to engage more deeply in civic learning and to become more active participants in their communities.
