Project Title: Bringing Preventive Dental Care to Underserved Children Through School-Based Outreach
Project Description:

Let’s Smile, Inc. is a Minnesota-based nonprofit dental organization that provides preventive and restorative dental care to children and teens who are uninsured or enrolled in public health insurance programs. Since 2013, Let’s Smile has operated both a community dental clinic and portable school-based outreach programs that bring dental care directly to children who face transportation, financial, and access barriers.

Funding from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will support Let’s Smile’s school-based dental outreach program, which delivers preventive dental services directly at Head Start preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, charter schools, and alternative learning centers throughout rural Southern Minnesota.

Our licensed dental hygienists and dental assistants transport portable dental equipment to school sites to provide oral health screenings, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and oral health education. By bringing care directly to schools, we remove many of the barriers that prevent children from receiving routine dental care.

Many children we serve come from low-income households and face significant barriers to accessing dental services. Poor oral health is one of the leading causes of preventable school absences among children, making access to preventive dental care critical for both health and academic success. Without early prevention and treatment, these children are at higher risk for untreated tooth decay, dental pain, infection, and missed school days.

This project will expand outreach services and increase the number of children receiving preventive dental care across multiple school settings. The requested funding will help support portable dental equipment, clinical supplies, and outreach operations necessary to provide these services.

Through this program, Let’s Smile anticipates serving 300–400 children with preventive dental care during the project year, helping children stay healthy, confident, and ready to learn.

Total Project Budget: $85,000 (This reflects staffing, travel, portable equipment, and clinical supplies needed to operate school-based outreach clinics.)
