Project Title: Behavioral Health Support for Camp Hope Youth
Project Description:
Shenandoah Community Health Clinic (SCHC) respectfully requests support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to provide behavioral health services for at-risk youth participating in Camp Hope, a summer program serving young people in Shenandoah County who face significant social, emotional, and environmental challenges. Many youth in our rural community experience barriers such as family instability, trauma, behavioral health concerns, and limited access to counseling services. Without early intervention and supportive mentorship, these challenges can contribute to long-term mental health struggles, school disengagement, and increased risk for substance use.
Funding will support licensed behavioral health professionals who will provide therapeutic services connected to the Camp Hope experience. These services will focus on strengthening emotional resilience, improving coping skills, and helping youth develop healthy strategies for managing stress, peer pressure, and life challenges.
Support for participants will begin prior to the start of camp through initial wellness screenings and relationship-building sessions with behavioral health staff. This early engagement helps youth feel safe, supported, and prepared to participate in a positive summer experience. During camp, clinicians will offer small group and individual counseling sessions that focus on emotional regulation, self-confidence, communication skills, and healthy decision-making. The camp setting provides a safe and encouraging environment where youth can build trust, connect with peers, and begin developing stronger emotional skills.
After camp concludes, SCHC will continue providing follow-up counseling and supportive services for youth who need ongoing care. These services help reinforce the progress made during camp and ensure youth continue receiving support as they transition back to their home and school environments.
Support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will help ensure that vulnerable youth in Shenandoah County have access to compassionate mental health care and positive mentorship opportunities. By strengthening emotional well-being during a critical stage of development, this project helps young people build confidence, resilience, and hope for the future while fostering healthier families and stronger communities.
