Project Title: Adolescent Rural Psychiatry
Project Description:

The purpose of the grant request is to address Child Psychiatry needs in rural Pennsylvania. Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization (ALPHA) is an established comprehensive psychiatric treatment program for children in grades k-12 and is one of the major programs offered by Community Guidance Center. ALPHA combines academic instruction by certified teachers along with therapy and psychiatric services by clinical care teams. ALPHA offers structured care without disruption to routine; it is considered a step down from inpatient hospitalization and can be a diversion to prevent hospitalization. Children in this program receive compassionate, intensive crisis intervention and therapy to improve their well-being. This program works directly with 13 area school districts to help with critical needs of children and their families. Program success has been positive. In Pennsylvania, regulations require Adolescent Partial Hospitalization programs to provide 2 psychiatric hours per week for every five adolescents per week. This requirement is hampered by the lack of certified Adolescent Psychiatrist in rural Pennsylvania. To combat this, we are forced to use telehealth with remote psychiatrists in an attempt to maintain compliance with the Office of Mental Health Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS). For this, we utilize a contracted Adolescent Psychiatrist physically located in the state of Texas and we are tasked with bringing him to Indiana Pennsylvania every 90 days for in- person requirements to subsidize his telehealth services. We are requesting financial assistance to subsidize the monetary burden of staffing an Adolescent Psychiatrist in the ALPHA program as mandated by the state of Pennsylvania. We are requesting $10,000 financial assistance for program funding to help offset this expense incurred for the Community Guidance Center to facilitate this program. ALPHA will be able to report the number of children diverted from inpatient hospitalization or more long-term treatment programs, maintaining family environments.
