Project Title: Girls on the Run Third Edition: Development, Piloting and Launch of a Newly Relevant and Responsive Activity-Based, Positive Youth Development Curriculum for Elementary School-Aged Girls
Project Description:

Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) seeks funding to create, pilot, and launch a new out-of-school time program curriculum for elementary school-aged girls.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, girls were already prone to heightened rates of physical inactivity and poor social-emotional outcomes as compared to male peers. During the transition to adolescence, girls’ physical activity levels begin to decrease dramatically compared to that of boys. By age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rates of boys, placing them at a higher risk for poor health outcomes. By mid-adolescence, adolescent girls are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mood disorder as boys and upwards of twice as many female students say their mental health is a barrier to learning as compared to their male counterparts. Research now indicates COVID-19 has exacerbated girls’ social-emotional health disparities and physical inactivity rates, particularly for children of color and from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Disruptions to girls’ typical routines have led to heightened stress levels, greater feelings of isolation and loneliness, and higher rates of depression among young girls.

To address these poor outcomes, the organization is planning the development and launch of a brand-new curriculum for the organization’s 3rd-5th grade program, Girls on the Run, beginning in 2022 and concluding in 2024. Entitled on the Run (GOTR) Third Edition, this new curriculum will ensure relevancy to the issues faced by girls today and differentiate the program from existing curricula to ensure GOTR is covering additional social-emotional topics that are important for girls’ healthy development. Lastly, it will allow the organization to expand the impact of its exemplar physical activity-based, positive youth development program across its nationwide council network (of 175+ councils) through a shortened season structure. The ultimate goal of the project is to further enhance the health literacy and well-being of more elementary-aged girls at a time when they need support the most. In 2022, GOTRI will serve 420 adolescent girls through the pre-piloting and piloting of GOTR Third Edition and 200,000 girls in total by 2024 after the program’s official launch.
