Project Title: Trauma-Sensitive Schools: Equipping Educators to Protect Children
Project Description:

Every school day, children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or family violence sit in classrooms where their behavior may be misread as defiance rather than recognized as a trauma response. ChildSafe’s Trauma-Sensitive Schools (TSS) program equips school staff to understand the difference and the results are measurable.
At Hutchins Elementary in South San ISD, three years of TSS implementation produced a 24% reduction in office discipline referrals from year one to year two, and a 47% reduction from year two to year three. At Dwight Middle School, incident reports dropped 14% within the first year (123 fewer incidents), with 89% of staff consistently applying trauma-sensitive crisis response strategies. At Price Elementary, staff reported a 58% favorable increase in the Supporting Staff Development domain and a 45% increase in Adopting Policies and Procedures.
ChildSafe is Bexar County’s only Children’s Advocacy Center and the sole provider of trauma-informed educational curricula in the region. TSS targets high-need campuses in marginalized communities, selected using the San Antonio Equity Atlas and Texas Education Agency absenteeism data. Participating schools form Trauma Teams and work through six implementation domains: staff development, safe environment creation, needs assessment, emotional skills building, family collaboration, and policy adaptation.
A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will support TSS curriculum delivery, educator training materials, and program staff time to expand services to additional campuses in FY 2026-27, directly benefiting school-age children and the educators responsible for their daily safety and growth.
When schools become trauma-sensitive, students feel safe enough to show up and learn. That transformation is what this investment makes possible.
