Project Title: Oasis After-School Academy (ASA)
Project Description:

Oasis respectfully requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our After-School Academy (ASA). The funds will defray after-school teachers’ salaries, as they provide impoverished children necessary instruction needed not to fall behind or fail out of school. Please note this is an acute need in Paterson. Amidst the pandemic, Paterson School District was remote for the 2020-21 school year, undoing years of academic progress.
For 21 years, our After-School Academy has provided children with highly personalized remedial and enrichment support every weekday from 3:30 pm-6:00 pm. This school year, we serve 100 children–filling the educational gap in math and language arts and providing psychosocial counseling. The participating children arrive at our community center at 3:00 pm from local public elementary schools. Upon arriving at Oasis, children are provided a full nutritious meal.
At 4:00 pm, the children break into classes by grade level to carry out intensive remedial work. We provide two hours of academic instruction for K-7th grade. A professional after-school teacher provides targeted institution that builds on appropriate grade-level skills. The teacher manages academic activities until 5:30 pm. Students generally spend one hour of the classroom time engaged in teacher-directed instruction and the second half on homework or remedial work. (Please note K-2nd grade spends no more than one hour on academics each day.)
On Fridays, students participate in STEAM activities.
We also address adverse childhood experiences associated with poverty. Our dedicated full-time youth social worker, a licensed MSW, offers children individual and group counseling. Our social worker provides daily individualized "check-ins," where students talk about issues troubling them at home or school. In groups, students participate in discussions and hands-on activities based on their needs.
Daily parent pick-up is between 5:45 pm-6:00 pm. Before students depart, they are provided snacks to eat at home.
