Project Description:

Flower Power’s “Flowers for Young Hearts” project will bring the healing power of flowers to children and young adults ages 0–21 across South Florida, particularly those experiencing illness, disability, hardship, or social isolation.

Flower Power rescues beautiful flowers that would otherwise be discarded and transforms them into uplifting bouquets and meaningful floral experiences. Through this project, rescued flowers will be delivered to pediatric hospital patients, young people with unique abilities, and children and families served by community organizations.

In addition to receiving bouquets, participants will have opportunities to take part in hands-on floral arranging activities designed to encourage creativity, self-expression, and connection. These experiences combine the arts with health and wellness by providing young people with a positive activity that can brighten difficult circumstances and create moments of joy.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will support floral supplies, vases, transportation, delivery, and program materials needed to provide these experiences throughout the project year.

Our goal is to reach hundreds of children and young adults with beautiful flowers and creative experiences while demonstrating that small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on emotional well-being and quality of life.

Project Title: Camp Ascendela — A Bilingual Business Accelerator for Girls
Project Description:

Camp Ascendela is a virtual, bilingual business accelerator for girls ages eight to thirteen across Massachusetts. We teach girls to think like founders: each chooses a real problem in her community and builds a venture to solve it, working through market research, leadership, money basics, AI and technology, public speaking, and more. Every topic is taught bilingually (English and Spanish) through a podcast, a reading, a video, and a hands-on challenge, and every girl is paired with mentors who guide her one-on-one, alongside specialist guest speakers. The season culminates in Pitch Fest, where the girls pitch their businesses to a panel of judges. The program runs during the Winter, February, and April school breaks, and it is need-blind, so no girl is ever turned away for inability to pay. Camp Ascendela reaches exactly the young people the Foundation cares about, children under twenty-one, at a pivotal age, giving girls mentoring, education, and the confidence to build something of their own. Many keep their businesses running afterward, earning and beginning to save toward college, and because each venture solves a real community problem, the benefit multiplies outward. This request of $4,697.78 funds the hands-on program materials for our next cohort of twenty girls: curriculum books, building and prototyping kits, creative supplies, program and design software, and Pitch Fest prizes, the tools each girl uses to turn her idea into something real. With a lean, volunteer-powered model, your support reaches the girls directly and helps prove a program built on one belief: that every girl can build something real, and build it to help other people.

OWLS (Outdoors Wilderness Leadership Skills) is a schoolwide outdoor learning program designed to provide all approximately 360 Rainier Prep students in grades 5–8 with meaningful, recurring opportunities to learn and lead beyond the classroom. Through quarterly enrichment electives and field studies in King County Parks and Washington State Parks, students explore local natural environments while developing outdoor skills, confidence, teamwork, leadership, environmental awareness, and stewardship.

Rainier Prep is an equity-centered, relationship-driven public charter middle school serving predominantly students of color and many students from limited-income households in South King County. OWLS addresses unequal access to outdoor recreation and environmental education by making these experiences part of the school experience rather than an opportunity available only to students with the resources or access to participate independently.

The program complements Rainier Prep’s academic mission by strengthening the whole student. Outdoor experiences allow students to apply classroom learning in authentic settings, navigate unfamiliar environments, solve problems, collaborate with peers, and develop agency and resilience. Students also build stronger connections to the parks and natural spaces in their own region.

Funding will help Rainier Prep expand OWLS into a consistent, sustainable schoolwide program by supporting outdoor experiences, field studies, equipment, and related student opportunities. The school will track participation and gather evidence related to student engagement, confidence, teamwork, leadership, agency, belonging, and physical activity. Over time, Rainier Prep aims to make outdoor learning a lasting component of its enrichment model, ensuring every student has the opportunity to discover, explore, challenge themselves, and lead.

For 48 years, Consejo Counseling and Referral Services has transformed the lives of children, youth, young adults, and families through compassionate, culturally responsive behavioral health care. We believe healing begins with understanding. Our trauma-informed approach meets youth and families where they are, fostering healing, growth, and resilience while addressing immediate needs and long-term well-being.

We provide youth behavioral health services using evidence-based approaches, including motivational interviewing and harm-reduction strategies. Each participant receives individualized support that builds on their strengths, skills, and hopes for the future.Through this project, we will serve youth and young adults who receive services at our Mount Vernon location, as well as individuals from surrounding Skagit and North Sound counties.

With this funding, Consejo will enhance existing services by expanding interactive, artistic, and experiential therapy for youth. Therapy can extend beyond a traditional office or conversations with a provider; healing can also occur through therapeutic outings, art, music, movement, creative expression, games, hands-on activities, and meaningful connection.

Funding will support therapeutic activities that strengthen emotional expression, self-regulation, communication, confidence, problem-solving, and healthy relationships. These experiences will complement clinical care while making therapy more engaging, accessible, and meaningful for youth.

As identified in our application, the project focuses on women and children throughout Palm Beach County . Funding will support the purchase and distribution of diapers, period supplies, and adult briefs, enabling us to meet rising demand and reduce the daily stress experienced by families who must choose between basic needs.

Covered South Florida operates through a community‑partner model, collaborating with schools, healthcare providers, senior programs, and social‑service agencies to ensure products reach individuals where they already receive support. Project Title: JAM Student Instrument Access & Supply Fund
Project Description:

Junior Appalachian Musicians, Inc. (JAM) seeks $8,000 toward a $95,000 regional initiative expanding access to affordable traditional Appalachian music education for youth while strengthening the community-based programs and teaching artists that make this access possible.

JAM currently supports 70 community affiliate programs across seven states, serving approximately 2,033 students and 225 teachers. Local affiliates are independently operated and community-driven, while JAM Inc. provides a common program model, teaching resources, professional development, technical assistance, instruments and instrument accessories, seed funding, and opportunities for regional collaboration.

The initiative will support four interconnected priorities: providing instruments and learning resources to students who may not otherwise have access; strengthening teaching quality and sustainability through the JAM Teacher Certification Program; providing seed funding and targeted assistance to new and developing programs; and supporting the 2027 JAM Summit and related regional professional development.

JAM’s Teacher Certification Program provides accessible professional development for traditional music educators and allows certified teaching artists to qualify for a $10-per-hour supplemental stipend. More than 70 instructors have completed certification.

JAM’s model emphasizes small-group instruction, ensemble playing, performance, cultural enrichment, and learning traditional music by ear. Programs are encouraged to provide financial assistance to families, and JAM’s current network demonstrates substantial commitment to accessibility: approximately 57% of students pay the already-reduced full tuition rate, while 16% pay a reduced rate, 9% participate on scholarship, and 18% attend completely free programs.

Hermanowski Family Foundation support would help JAM ensure that children in rural and underserved Appalachian communities can access meaningful music education while strengthening the local capacity to sustain these programs over time.

Project Title: Healing Spaces: Pediatric Hospital Room Transformations
Project Description:

Once Upon a Room Charleston provides personalized hospital room transformations for children and teens facing cancer, serious illnesses, and extended hospital stays at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Working closely with Child Life staff, our volunteers learn each child’s interests, favorite colors, hobbies, characters, and themes and create an individualized room designed to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of home to the hospital environment.

A $10,000 grant will directly fund approximately 14 complete room transformations, based on an average cost of approximately $700 per room. Funding will be used to purchase new bedding, blankets, pillows, lighting, wall décor, storage, personalized items, toys, games, and other age-appropriate comfort items. All items provided during a transformation are gifted to the child and family.

Once Upon a Room Charleston is community funded and volunteer driven, allowing grant support to be directed toward the children we serve. Through this project, approximately 14 hospitalized children and their families will experience a personalized environment that provides positive distraction, promotes emotional well-being, and creates moments of normalcy during an otherwise difficult hospital stay.
