Project Title: Bridging Voices Across the Justice Divide
Project Description:

Beyond City Limits Inc. proposes to continue and expand its collaboration with Pan American International High School, building on a pilot program that used the power of storytelling to close the distance between incarcerated youth and their peers on the outside.
In the pilot, I brought writings from BCL’s incarcerated youth participants together with my own poetry to lead high schoolers through a series of conversations on juvenile justice, not as an abstract policy issue, but as lived experience. Students read, discussed, and sat with perspectives they rarely encounter directly. From there, they wrote and staged an original theater production, weaving their own voices together with the words of incarcerated youth into a single narrative.
The result was more than a performance. It was an act of connection, high schoolers carrying the stories of young people the system too often renders invisible, and in doing so, building empathy, awareness, and a shared stake in reforming how we treat justice-impacted youth.
We are seeking support to continue this work: a second cohort at Pan American, with the goal of expanding to additional schools across NYC/NJ in the coming year. Continuation will include a refined curriculum drawing on BCL’s Cultural Literacy programming, additional writing sessions with incarcerated youth participants, and a new theatrical production culminating each cycle.
This program sits at the heart of BCL’s model, pairing lived experience with creative expression to build pathways of understanding between communities that rarely intersect. It offers high schoolers a rare form of civic education, and it gives incarcerated youth a public voice and audience they are too often denied.

Total Project Budget: $20,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Beyond City Limits Inc.: $5,000 committed in direct funding, covering program facilitation, curriculum development, and coordination with participating incarcerated youth writers. – Houses on the Moon Theater Company: In-kind contribution covering the theatrical production component, including staging, direction, and performance support for the high school production.

Project Duration: This program will run over a 9–12 month cycle, aligned with the [2026–2027] school year, beginning September and concluding with a final theatrical performance in June . This timeline allows for curriculum development and writing sessions with incarcerated youth participants, an extended engagement period with high school students, rehearsal and production of the theatrical piece, and a culminating public performance.
Geographical Area Served: This program directly serves students and youth connecting justice-impacted youth with high school students in the local community. It reflects Beyond City Limits Inc.’s broader service area across New York City & New Jersey,
Age Group To Be Served: ages 14–18

Project Title: Operation Build Strong Minds and Bodies: Healthy Futures Initiative
Project Description:

Operation Build Strong Minds and Bodies: Healthy Futures Initiative is a year-round youth development program serving children and teens throughout Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The program provides underserved youth with access to STEM education, nutrition education, healthy lifestyle instruction, leadership development, mentoring, and life skills in a safe, supportive environment.

Many of the children we serve face financial barriers and have limited access to high-quality enrichment opportunities outside of school. Through after-school programs, seasonal camps, and community outreach, participants develop critical thinking, teamwork, confidence, resilience, and healthy habits while engaging in hands-on educational experiences that support academic and personal growth.

A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will provide scholarships for children in need and support STEM learning materials, nutrition education resources, leadership curriculum, and program supplies. By removing financial barriers and expanding access to educational and wellness opportunities, the project will help children build the knowledge, confidence, and healthy behaviors needed to succeed in school and throughout life. Program success will be measured through enrollment, attendance, participant retention, and pre- and post-program assessments that evaluate improvements in STEM learning, leadership development, nutrition knowledge, and healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Total Project Budget: 150,000

Project Title: Tropical Forest Stewards & "Youth Corps" Pilot Program
Project Description:

The International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) proposes to pilot a Tropical Forest Stewards Youth Corps—a year-long service-learning program that trains and deploys a cohort of youth (ages 16–21) in Florida as leaders in urban forestry and conservation.

Responding to a recognized need within ISTF’s own network, the program equips participants with hands-on skills in forest monitoring, invasive species removal, and tree planting, while building leadership through peer education and community outreach. Youth will take ownership of a culminating community action project—designing and leading a local conservation initiative that benefits their own neighborhoods.

The Corps bridges ISTF’s global mission of sustainable tropical forest management with local action, empowering the next generation of forest stewards. Participants develop professional competencies, environmental literacy, and the confidence to become advocates for their communities and the natural world.

The program will be piloted in Florida, serving 15–20 youth from diverse backgrounds. Funds support program coordination, training materials, field equipment, and modest stipends for youth leaders. ISTF’s existing network of forestry professionals provides mentorship and technical expertise, ensuring a high-quality, impactful experience.

By investing in youth leadership today, we cultivate the conservation leaders of tomorrow—transforming young lives while strengthening community resilience and environmental stewardship.

Project Title: Funding Support for a 10-Week Free Summer Program
Project Description:

Recognizing the growing need for affordable childcare beyond the school year, PYC is expanding its summer programming to provide a free, full-day, ten-week program operating from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This expansion addresses a critical gap in the community, as many youth have aged out of Plymouth’s only traditional childcare option but are still too young to be left home alone while parents work. The program will provide 30 youth with a safe, enriching environment from late June through late August, including four nutritious meals each day, ensuring that no child goes without supervision, nourishment, or opportunities to learn and grow because of their family’s financial circumstances.
Our comprehensive programming includes mentoring, leadership and empowerment activities, creative arts, social and recreational opportunities, STEAM learning, mental health and self-exploration, substance misuse prevention, college and career readiness, academic support, and meaningful community service experiences. In partnership with Plymouth State University, student volunteers work alongside PYC staff to provide high-quality mentoring and service-learning opportunities that strengthen connections between youth and their community.
