Project Title: Erie Next Gen Leaders: Empowering Youth to Lead and Succeed
Project Description:

The Jefferson Educational Society (JES) is a nonpartisan think tank dedicated to civic enlightenment and community progress through research, discussion, and education. Since 2008, JES has provided high-quality programs that engage Erie residents in meaningful dialogue on critical issues.

JES seeks $10,000 to support Erie Next Gen Leaders, a civic education and leadership program for youth ages 14-18 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Designed to equip young people with leadership skills and a deeper understanding of civic life, the program empowers participants to become engaged citizens and future community leaders.
Held on Saturdays from June through August, Erie Next Gen Leaders offers interactive sessions featuring elected officials, nonprofit leaders, and industry professionals. Topics include civic leadership, systemic injustice, government structure, financial literacy, career pathways, and voter education. Participants must complete at least eight of ten sessions and submit a reflective essay on civic engagement to graduate. The program culminates in a graduation ceremony, where students present on issues affecting Erie. Graduates receive a stipend, a certificate, and priority acceptance into JES’s Jefferson Civic Leadership Academy upon reaching age eligibility.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will cover program expenses, including marketing, speaker and participant stipends, educational materials, and program evaluation. These resources ensure equitable access to civic education, particularly for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Erie Next Gen Leaders doesn’t just educate – it empowers. By equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead, this program builds a pipeline of engaged citizens ready to shape Erie’s future. Rooted in JES’s mission of civic enlightenment and lifelong learning, it also embodies the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to transforming lives – giving young adults the tools to succeed and reach their full potential. The impact of this program extends beyond a classroom, fostering a new generation who will drive meaningful change in their community.

Total Project Budget: 20,000

Other Funding

Project Title: Stable Moments at HHH Ranch
Project Description:

The Stable Moments Program is a trauma-informed mentorship initiative designed for children and youth up to age 22 who are in foster care, have recently phased out of foster care, or have been adopted.

For children who have been adopted or placed in foster care, life often presents unique and difficult challenges. Children come into foster care due to abuse, abandonment or neglect and are at a higher risk of becoming incarcerated, pregnant, addicted to drugs, and dependents of state benefits. Without addressing their complex trauma needs, these children often repeat the cycle of their parents, and their children enter the system as well.

Over 400,000 kids are in foster care without a permanent place to live, and 70% of them have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder—affecting their adaptive behavior, attention, cognition, executive functioning, and memory. The instability of their home life, coupled with past traumas and potential health challenges, often leaves them ill-prepared to develop essential life skills for a successful transition into adulthood. Tragically, 1 in 4 foster youth will be incarcerated in their lifetime, and 80% of current inmates have experienced foster care.

The Stable Moments program provides structured, trauma-informed one-on-one mentorship experience on a month-to-month basis, with a recommended commitment of at least one year (48 weeks in the calendar week), to fill critical gaps in early intervention services while helping participants develop essential life skills through equine and non-equine activities. Each participant is paired with a certified mentor who tailors a customized plan based on the participant’s strengths and developmental needs. Through consistent, supportive relationships and engaging activities, the program fosters self-worth, emotional regulation, independence, and healthy relationships—helping participants build confidence and stability in a nurturing environment. Ultimately, the program equips participants with the skills and resilience needed to thrive into adulthood.

Project Description:

Teens RISE is a leadership development program for local teens. Teen health ambassadors:

• Help facilitate RISE community programming and help staff community events.

• Share a seat on RISE’s board.

The group meets at least monthly during the school year. Up to 5 youth are enrolled in the program each year and receive a $50/month stipend for sharing their experience, insights, and time.

In total this program costs about $15,000/year to run, including:

• Food, lodging, activities, and transportation for the Nashville trip

• Food at monthly meetings.

• Training for youth.

• Monthly Stipends

• The cost of prepping for and staffing regular meetings and the Nashville trip.

• Administrative costs such as paying stipends, keeping consent forms updated, etc.

Teens RISE is our hope for the future. They have the passion to make change now and the energy to carry it forward. They are eager to learn and humble about what they don ‘t know. In addition to RISE mentoring these teens, Teens RISE keeps us accountable to youth in our region. They are the future we want to see–healthy, compassionate, inclusive and affirming, and eager to learn.

Our theater company produces one children’s production per year – most recently "Stuart Little" – in which we engage children from age 8 – 18 in 4 weeks of performances. Not only do we support acting but also teach the older children the art of sound and lighting production as well as stage management. Project Title: Youth Playwriting Programs
Project Description:

Everyone deserves access to a high quality theater education. Founded in 1995 by award-winning playwright Karen Zacarías, Young Playwrights’ Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices. YPT believes that creative expression and theater are valuable tools for the education, enrichment, and self-actualization of young people. We serve 900 low-income DC elementary, middle, and high school students annually in our in-school, afterschool, and summer programs that guide youth through the fundamentals of playwriting towards the creation of their own play. We then bring in professional actors to perform our youth’s work, validating their voice and celebrating their vision.

YPT programs address the literacy and socio-economic needs deepened by the pandemic, bringing youth-centered theater programming to schools in DC that do not have programs of their own. Recognizing that art is inherently powerful, YPT equips young people to realize and use the power of their own stories in ways that positively transform them, their audience, and their community.

The youth we serve report greater confidence (93%), higher rates of engagement at school (82%), and measurable growth in ELA proficiency, as shown in a study performed by educational psychologist Dr. Barry Oreck, who found that “[YPT] program’s success in overcoming differences in socio-economic status, English language skills, and attitudes toward writing… demonstrates playwriting as a productive, coherent part of the English curriculum, supporting literacy standards while opening a door to self-expression, empathy and empowerment.”

With your support, 900 students will receive comprehensive theater programming, learn the fundamentals of storytelling and playwriting, and gain the tools, support, and confidence they need to become stronger writers and performers. YPT will engage youth in educational opportunities that promote confidence, skill development, and address the achievement gaps caused by the lack of robust arts education in DC schools.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 26, 2025
Requested Amount: $8,000.00

Project Title: ‘Jammin on the Mountain’
Project Description:

The Southern Highland Music Foundation is dedicated to helping our region’s residents learn about and take pride in the unique heritage and culture of Georgia’s Southern Appalachian region.

Rabun County Georgia is a sparsely populated, rural area of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. It is noted for its beautiful mountain scenery, rivers, lakes and streams that attract thousands of tourists and seasonal visitors each year; but the county’s permanent resident population is small, about 17,000 people with a poverty rate of 13%. More than 50% of our school children rely upon subsidized food service at our public schools. SHMF works to help our school-age children (Middle School and High School), learn about and take pride in our region’s history and culture by providing no-cost and very low-cost music instruction (including free instruments if needed) in our public schools and also for our homeschooled children.

The project we request funding for is a unique, after school and summer “Jammin’ on the Mountain’ program that will be open to students ages 11-18. The goal is to provide music instruction on acoustic stringed instruments and also vocal training (solo and harmony). The program will have a special emphasis on ‘Peer Learning,’ a popular learning tool used at the Foxfire School in the last century to encourage students to work together in small groups to informally exchange music techniques and tips. In this way we will help new music students continue to learn over the summer months and also create new ‘string bands’ and performance ensembles to showcase our new musicians to our community throughout the year.

SHMF believes that children who are actively engaged in the rich traditions of their geographic area, especially the music and the arts, are more connected and better prepared to strengthen their communities for future generations.

Project Title: Art for All: Delivering Healing Through Equitable, Creative Expression for Pediatric Cancer Patients
Project Description:

Kids & Art Foundation improves the quality of life—and health outcomes—for children and teens diagnosed with cancer by harnessing the therapeutic power of art and creative expression. A pediatric cancer diagnosis brings not only physical challenges, but also emotional and psychological hardship for both the patient and their family. Isolation, pain, and treatment-related side effects can lead to anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and a sense of disconnection.

While clinical teams focus on treating the disease, Kids & Art fills a critical gap in care by supporting the emotional well-being of pediatric cancer patients. Our art-based programs provide young patients and their families with meaningful opportunities to create, connect, and express themselves—reminding them that they are more than their diagnosis.

Kids & Art’s Amaeyzing ArtKits Program delivers all-in-one, process-based art experiences to more than 20 hospital partners nationwide. Each ArtKit includes materials, written instructions, and QR codes linking to pre-recorded video tutorials led by professional teaching artists. These kits are distributed to patients in hospital waiting rooms, infusion centers, and in-patient rooms—making it possible to engage in creative expression during treatment, while traveling, or at home in isolation.

ArtKits are intentionally designed to meet the developmental, emotional, and psychosocial needs of pediatric oncology patients. Projects focus on process over product, encouraging exploration, experimentation, and emotional release through art. Whether used independently or as a shared family activity, ArtKits create moments of relief, joy, and self-discovery in even the most challenging settings.

Our ultimate goal is to help each child feel seen—not just as a patient, but as an artist, an individual, and a whole person. By removing financial, social, and geographic barriers to participation, Kids & Art ensures equitable access to healing through creativity. Every kit is offered free of charge, making them a sustainable and inclusive tool for emotional support across diverse patient populations.

Through the transformative power of art, Kids & Art brings light, imagination, and connection to children facing some of life’s most difficult moments—helping them reframe their identity, reclaim their voice, and rediscover their spark
