Project Title: Nights of Shelter and Days of Care for Children
Project Description:

For the Nights of Shelter and Days of Care Program for Children, OLI houses and offers specialized supports for the children of the pregnant women we serve. Our Child Advocate assesses each child’s needs, and a plan of support is developed with the mother to ensure the physical, emotional, behavioral, and social needs of her children are being met.

Healthy meals, clothing, educational and age-appropriate toys/activities are offered. All case management support is recorded on each child’s progress documenting challenges, achievement of milestones, and other pertinent data. Staff monitor, educate, and model parenting skills for mothers with appropriate intervention, counseling, education, and support. Mothers attend a weekly parenting class based upon our Family Wellness Program.

Professional staff meet with new clients within the first 10 business days after clients’ entry into the program, discovering pertinent information related to mother, prenatal child, and all older children. The Child Advocate performs a developmental screening and assessment of needs, they make referrals as necessary and coordinate enrollment into Parents as Teachers, Nurses for Newborns, and available Head Start programs. The Child Advocate assists with enrolling school-age children in a new local school or arranging for transportation to the school of origin, as well as advocating for and educating mothers on how to advocate for their children for IEPs and other educational supports.

In addition to the work of the Child Advocate, other professional in-house staff work with mothers and their children to identify and address any physical or emotional health needs. When the children enter the home, they are often suffering the same traumatic effects of homelessness and/or abuse as their mothers. We work with the families to focus on preventing child abuse, by teaching stress coping mechanisms, appropriate methods of discipline and by fostering parent-child bonding.

Project Title: Creative Arts Academy for Children and Young Adults
Project Description:

The Creative Arts Academy for Children and Young Adults, one of our three signature programs, is designed to nurture the artistic talents of disadvantaged youth and provide a vital platform for creative expression. As arts programs are increasingly removed from traditional educational systems, many children and young adults are left without opportunities to explore their creative potential. This program bridges the gap by creating a love for the arts and offering enriching experiences that inspire creativity and confidence. A $5,000 grant from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would be transformative and enable us to expand our program. This funding would directly support the acquisition of essential art supplies, musical instruments, and technology needed to enhance our programming. It would also allow us to provide scholarships for underserved children, hire skilled instructors, and develop specialized workshops that cater to a variety of artistic disciplines. With the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s partnership, we could significantly strengthen our capacity to serve more children and youth each year and ensure that financial barriers never limit a child’s opportunity to explore and develop their creative potential. This investment would not only positively impact the lives of our young learners today but would also lay a foundation for their lifelong success, fostering confidence, critical thinking, and artistic expression. By empowering the next generation, this grant would create a ripple effect of positive change for families and the broader community.

Project Title: Providing Children in Foster Care an identity beyond "foster kid"
Project Description:

The Mission of This Is Me is to provide youth in foster care an identity to promote confidence, dignity, and a positive self-worth. This Is Me works to give kids pride in their accomplishments to see themselves as artists, athletes, scientists, and more! Foster youth typically have the label of "foster kid" – what if we give them something to be passionate about and something to grow their futures. Our approach is grounded in a psychological concept called ephemera – the idea that physical objects, like photos or mementos, serve as emotional anchors. they provide proof that someone mattered, that their experiences were important, and that they existed in this world. We believe that foster youth, who often face trauma and instability, need these physical markers to help them feel seen, heard, and valued.

This is Me will provide Forster youth with meaningful ephemera that helps them create an identity beyond their foster care experience. Our primary goal is to give these young people the confidence to see themselves as more than their circumstances, and to show them that they have the power to shape their own narratives.

Working with a group of volunteer photographers, trained in PTSD, Trauma, and Anxiety – kids and families in foster care will have access to senior photo shoots, and adoption and reunification photo shoots. Kids in foster care will be given a yearbook each year that shows them with their friends, in sports and clubs that they are passionate about – being a kid just like their peers. This is Me will provide letter jackets, club and sport photos, funding for things like swim club, cooking classes, dance class, horse camp, etc that allows youth in foster care a way to build on their passions and interests.
