Requested Amount: $10,000.00

Project Title: MAN UP CEO Program
Project Description:

Getting youth prepared for employment sets them on a path toward long-term success. Youth employment and internship programs can reduce youth violent crimes by 35% to 43% and lower mortality rates, Office of Management & Budget, The White House, 2022.
Black youth continue to have the highest unemployment rate, outpacing their counterparts, and are more likely to be disconnected from work and school compared to Latino and White Youth (ASP Current Population Survey, 2021). Thus, MUCP will target 20 Black and Brown Mentees, ages 14 to 21, residing in high-risk communities across Northwest Orlando.
Approximately 20% of the population in 32808, 32811, and 32805 live below the poverty line, meaning there are over 11,000 youth under 18 years of age living in poverty. According to the Florida Department of Health, many residents without a high school diploma exist. These areas also account for 57% of total juvenile arrests in Orlando. Studies show poorer youth are at greater risk for poor academic achievement, school dropout, abuse and neglect, behavioral and socioemotional problems, physical health problems, and developmental delays.
MUCP is an innovative incentive-based program that provides youth with a career-readiness experience. For 12-months, mentees shadow entrepreneurs and professionals from the local community. MUCP will include employment preparation, project-based literacy tutoring, career exploration, job shadowing, life skills, mentorship, financial literacy, post-secondary planning, and linkage to social services. Given the pilot’s success, we are confident that by the end of the 12-month program, 20 mentees will demonstrate a:
• 20% decline in youth disconnection from workforce or school.
• 50% of students will show 25% or more growth in 21st Century Skills post-assessment.
• 50% of participants will apply to post-secondary opportunities.
• 50% of participants will improve their literacy skills by one-half of a grade level.
• 50% of youth participants will demonstrate measurable progress in financial management

Project Title: Outdoor School General Support
Project Description:

Today’s students are more disconnected from nature than ever, spending over an hour on social media for every minute spent outside. This over-reliance on screens is replacing real-world connections, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and mental health issues. As one of the nation’s leading outdoor schools, NorthBay offers a transformative solution by integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into immersive nature-based experiences. Through our 97-acre campus along the Chesapeake Bay, students engage in hands-on environmental education, team-building, and high-adventure challenges that build critical life skills, improve academic performance, and reduce behavioral issues.

Since 2005, NorthBay has served nearly 300,000 public school students, with a focus on 6th graders from underserved communities. Eighty-one percent of our students are students of color, 72% live below the poverty line, and 15% are English Language Learners. These students face numerous challenges, from limited access to educational resources to housing instability and the digital divide. At NorthBay, they find a sanctuary where they can connect with the natural world, develop resilience, and build confidence, often experiencing the outdoors in a meaningful way for the first time.

Research shows the profound mental health benefits of spending time in nature, including reduced stress and improved mood and cognitive function. NorthBay is dedicated to using the natural environment as an integrating context for learning, shifting student attitudes toward leadership and environmental stewardship while supporting academic outcomes. To sustain and expand these life-changing programs, we rely on philanthropic support. Your donation will help us continue offering reduced rates to schools, allowing students to explore nature, discover new passions, and develop skills that will shape their futures.

Project Title: Empowering Futures: Educational and After-School Support for Children and Teens of Fallen Veterans Affected by Service-Related Illnesses
Project Description:

This project is designed to provide educational and after-school activity support for children and teenagers under 18 who have lost a military veteran parent due to cancer or illnesses related to their service. These children face unique challenges, both emotionally and academically, as they navigate the loss of a parent, often compounded by the stresses of dealing with service-related illnesses before the loss. The project aims to fill a critical gap by offering a supportive, structured environment where they can receive academic assistance, emotional support, and opportunities for personal growth.

Many children in military families experience school disruptions due to relocations and the emotional strain of military life. Losing a parent can further impact their academic performance and social engagement. This program will offer tutoring and educational support tailored to their needs, ensuring they stay on track academically while also promoting personal resilience. In addition, the after-school activities will provide them with a safe and supportive space to engage in creative, physical, and social activities, helping to build a sense of community and belonging.

The project also addresses the emotional and psychological needs of these children and teens by incorporating grief counseling, peer support groups, and mentorship from adults who understand the unique experiences of military families. This holistic approach ensures that participants receive academic support and the emotional care they need during this difficult time.

By fostering academic achievement and emotional well-being, the program will help these children and teens develop the tools they need to thrive despite their loss. It will honor the sacrifices made by their parents and empower them to build bright, successful futures.

Project Title: Expanding Access to Education and Enrichment for Baltimore’s Youth
Project Description:

The Village Learning Place (VLP) serves as a vital lifeline for youth in Baltimore, where approximately 85% of students live in poverty, and less than 10% meet grade-level proficiency in core subjects such as math and English. The LINK After School and Summer programs provide a safe, structured environment for over 200 children annually, offering tutoring, enrichment activities, and mentorship that counter the negative effects of systemic poverty, high dropout rates, and limited access to quality education.

VLP’s programs are urgently needed in a city where youth face stark challenges, including exposure to high crime rates, inadequate educational resources, and limited opportunities. Our programs aim to break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation by offering access to safe spaces, nurturing a love of learning, and fostering resilience. With a grant of $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we can expand our after-school and summer offerings to engage more youth, providing them with the tools they need to thrive academically and personally.

This funding will directly support daily tutoring sessions, enrichment activities, and community engagement initiatives, ensuring that our programs continue to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for Baltimore’s most vulnerable youth.

By emphasizing the urgent need for educational and community resources in Baltimore and illustrating the role that VLP plays in addressing these needs, this narrative strengthens the case for funding support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation.

Project Title: Strumming Songbird Scholars Music Program
Project Description:

The Strumming Songbird Scholars music program at Unity Christian Academy (UCA) is an initiative designed to provide K-12 students with the opportunity to explore and develop their musical talents through guitar
instruction. Students will benefit from learning in a supportive environment with access to quality musical instruments and instruction, including guest lectures from local community volunteers who share their expertise in singing and playing the guitar. UCA currently teaches basic music theory to grades K-2. They want to add guitar to grades 3-4, and then grades 5-12 will continue to advance in their music skills by applying them in the UCA performing arts program that holds annual plays for the community, including singing/music/acting. The program aims to enhance cognitive development, boost self-confidence, and promote teamwork and collaboration by integrating music education into students’ academic journeys. The Strumming Songbird Scholars program aspires to inspire the next generation of musicians and creative thinkers through the generous support of the Warrior Club Parent Teacher Organization and the community. We hope to secure the $3,000 funding to purchase the start-up equipment for the program in 2024 and subsequently launch the program in January 2025.
