Today’s Date: March 26, 2024
Requested Amount: $9,000

Project Title: One to One Reading Tutoring 2025
Project Description:

EDU-LINK supports students and families through offering scholarships for an intensive one on one private tutoring reading program (outside of school). These scholarships, based on a family income sliding scale, make this life changing experience available to all and not just to those who can afford it. A full scholarship for 100 hours of tutoring costs $3000, so this grant could support 300 hours of tutoring for 3 students on a full scholarship. Our local data shows that the COVID years caused a big interruption of education and especially in regards to reading. In our research, we have read that a lack of literacy can lead to higher health risks, greater unemployment, poverty and crime and so we are committed to doing our part in helping to create responsible-children in their families, students in their classrooms and eventually citizens in their communities. Reading opens a whole new world of freedom!

Total Project Budget: $29,250 (this total is based upon our 2023 total budget)

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Give to the Max Minnesota, End of Year Donation Drive, Thrivent Choice Dollars, Local clinic/hospital community grant, local service group grants, Annual EDU-LINK board members’ donations

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 26, 2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Altum Institute Missionary Program
Project Description:

The Altum Institute Missionary Program hosts 10-15 individuals as missionaries to help run programs and retreats at Annunciation Heights camp. The missionary year is one of intentional training, formation, and community living, providing participants opportunities to learn valuable leadership skills and deepen their faith. These missionaries live on-site at camp for at least an entire year and are responsible for leading summer youth and family camps, teaching middle and high-school students in our experiential outdoor science lab program, serving guest groups throughout the year, plus a variety of other camp duties. In leading these programs, missionaries guide the youth who attend this camp in activities that deepen their faith, promote positive self-image and esteem, and provide them with skills that build strength and independence. The missionaries are often referred to as the “heart of the Heights,” as, without them, our camp would not be able to offer the robust programming that is currently available for our youth.
Between the summer camps and the outdoor education programming at Annunciation Heights, approximately 1900 youth, mostly ranging from 10-18 years old, participate in programs led by missionaries of the Altum Institute. Campers at our facility spend their days immersed in nature in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, learning about the world around them and their place in it. Additionally, through these programs, they are guided in activities that promote healthy lifestyles while being invited to express themselves in various excursions, small groups, games, and competitions. The Altum Institute is vital to making these experiences happen, and a grant of $10,000 would fund all of the expenses for at least one missionary over the course of a year.

Total Project Budget: 114,601

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): General budget for the camp includes funding for the missionary program

Project Duration: 12 months
Geographical Area Served: Campers come from all over the country, but the vast majority are from the Denver metro area

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Service Dog for a Child with Autism
Project Description:

RFI breeds, trains, and provides Service Dogs for children with autism at no cost to the recipients. In the last eleven years, we have changed the lives of over 50 children with autism by providing them with a dog trained specifically for their needs.

An RFI Service Dog helps keep a child with autism safe in public settings and minimizes or eliminates emotional outbursts. In many cases, the Service Dog accompanies the child to school, helping them transition between activities and locations.

Training Service Dogs is a time and resource intensive activity – it takes around two years and more than $40,000 to train a single dog. The $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will cover final placement expenses for matching a child with autism with an RFI Service Dog. This includes support for the third and final stage of Service Dog training, when RFI trainers work with clients and their families to find the right Service Dog match and train the dog for client-specific tasks.

RFI is committed to creating a positive client experience and matching children with a dog that best serves their needs. We provide 100+ hours of training and support to each client, including one-on-one pre-placement and post-placement support that is scheduled to accommodate their availability. Training takes place at RFI facilities and at the client’s home to ensure the success of the Service Dog placement. Many of the training sessions at RFI facilities span multiple days and children and their caretakes typically stay on-site in RFI provided lodging.

Following the placement, RFI provides monthly check-ins for the first year of the placement, a 90-day post-placement assessment for the Service Dog, and annual wellness and training assessments for the Service Dog until the Service Dog retires to life as a pet.

Total Project Budget: $10,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): RFI relies on the generosity of the community to achieve its mission and has diverse funding sources. Approximately one-half of funding is received from foundations and one-half is received from private donors (individuals and corporations). This is an independent request to support a Service Dog placement. RFI does not currently have government funding.

Project Duration: One year (maximum time to identify and place a Service Dog match with a child with autism)
Geographical Area Served: RFI serves clients throughout the United States.
Age Group To Be Served: Children with autism aged 5 to 12 at the time of the Service Dog placement.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Adaptive Running Program for Children with Disabilities in Los Angeles
Project Description:

Fast Feet seeks funding to support the expansion of our adaptive running program serving children with disabilities at Aviation Park in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles. Recognizing the transformative impact of physical activity on the overall well-being and development of children with unique needs, our adaptive running program provides a supportive and inclusive space where they can engage in adapted running activities. Grant funding is essential to acquire adaptive equipment, ensure trained staff and volunteers and cover program-related costs, allowing our organization to successfully pioneer a unique initiative that promotes physical fitness, self-confidence and a sense of achievement among children with disabilities in its inaugural year in Los Angeles.

Participants will meet once a week over an eight week season. We plan to offer four seasons in our pilot year (Spring, Fall, Summer and Winter). Supported by our amazing team of coaches, each athlete learns the fundamentals of track-and-field (including warm-ups, drills, sprints, relays) as well as how to be a supportive team player and community member. To evaluate the success of our program, coaches record and track data regarding each child’s progress across eight physical benchmarks.

The goal of our program is to give children with disabilities the opportunity to train, work out and race. To ensure each individual child’s needs are properly supported, our curriculum consists of multiple pathways that allow for differentiation as needed. We also pair our athletes with volunteers who provide training assistance and positive encouragement.

Our inclusive running program plays a transformative role in shaping the mindset of children with disabilities, instilling in them the belief that they can reach unlimited possibilities. When kids with disabilities participate in sports alongside their peers, barriers dissolve, and a sense of belonging emerges.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 19, 2024
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: School Programs
Project Description:

South Carolina’s public-school system consistently ranks in the nation’s bottom ten, with disparities between low-income students and their peers. Since opening in 2000, the South Carolina Aquarium has served the state’s students and educators through Dominion Energy School Programs, providing an average of 6,000 K-12 students and 425 teachers annually with free and immersive STEM education to reinforce state standards.

Before the Aquarium opened its doors to connect people with water, wildlife, and wild places, this flagship education program was informed by a master education plan. Combining the joy of learning with the wonder of nature, each program has an original curriculum designed to meet state standards by grade level. Teachers invited to participate in the program attend a development workshop and are provided pre-visit and post-visit activities for their classroom. Students visit the Aquarium during field trips to interact with live animals and engage in age-appropriate lessons that complement classroom teachings.

Teachers apply to the program through a lottery system, in which applications from Title I schools are prioritized to support disadvantaged students. In the 2022-2023 school year, 422 applications were received, but the program could only award 119 programs due to classroom limitations, meaning that for every class served, two were turned away. Due to overwhelming demand for School Programs, the Aquarium incorporated program expansion into our current five-year strategic plan.

In early 2025, the Aquarium will debut the Boeing Learning Lab, a 9,000-square-foot education complex that will serve as the main hub for School Programs. A short walk from the Aquarium, this state-of-the-art facility will add five waterfront classrooms to almost double the program’s capacity and increase acceptance rate from 30% to 50%. During this exciting time of expansion and growth, the Aquarium remains committed to education and hopes your foundation will consider supporting School Programs.

Total Project Budget: $328,679

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The Aquarium’s fundraising team seeks annual funding in support of SPs through individual, corporate, and foundational giving platforms. Additionally, School Programs receives financial support through the revenue that is generated by Aquarium ticketing sales. Committed funding raised toward the execution and operation of Dominion Energy School Programs for the 2024 academic year is as follows: 1.) Corporate funders: Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, Trident Construction, Gildan Activewear Inc., The Boeing Company, AFL Global, State Farm; 2.) Foundational giving: J. H. Walker Legacy Foundation, The Kennedy-Herterich Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Joseph J. Schott Foundation, The Ceres Foundation. Potential funders to date include: The Mark Elliot Motley Foundation, The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation, The Brutten Family Foundation, Leon Levine Foundation, and The Comis Foundation.
